Looking to launch a site and would like some pointers on going about finding a lawyer.

I was hoping to see if some veteran can advise me on a few things to consider before choosing a lawyer that specializes in the web industry.

Any recommendations? Any advice? ect...

Anything would be beneficial- Thanks.

Do you really need a lawyer, remember hire any professional and you have to dig deep in your pockets.

In searching for an attorney, you should follow the same steps, regardless of the specialty needed:

1. Contact your State Bar Association and see if they certify attorneys as Certified Specialists in the particular field. If so, ask if they have an Information and Referral services. Few State Bars do, but it is worth asking. If they do certify in the particular area, keep that in mind in choosing an attorney later on - being state certified as a specialist implies if not a level of overall competences, at least a degree of experience.

2. Ask friends, associates, and others whose opinion you know you can trust, if they can recommend (not just know, or have used) an attorney in this field.

3. Contact your local Bar Associations and their Lawyer Information and Referral Service. They have panels of attorneys in various fields who have to qualify to be included on the panel in each such field (not nearly as rigorous as to be certified by the State Bar but still a vetting procedure). They provide free or reduced-fee consultations with their panel attorneys, and if you find one that you feel is experienced and competent (remember to ask about certification) you can then hire them.

4. There are national bar associations in particular fields (similar to the trade union concept) such as associations of tax attorneys, copyright attorneys, family law practitioners, etc. See if there is one or more in the field you need, and contact them to see if they provide names of member attorneys in your area.

5. *Most work but best results, especially in matters involving litigation: Look up the documents (may be able to do some online, may need to go to local courts) in pending cases involving issues similar to yours, and involving major companies. See who represents those companies and contact some of those attorneys.

NEVER, and I repeat, NEVER hire an attorney who spends a bundle advertising. There is a direct reverse correlation between advertising budget and competence/reliability/honesty.

Sorry, but I have looked very carefully at a considerable amount of information about Dozier, and based on that, plus my 10 years in affiliate marketing and the preceding 27 years practicing law, I would not, under any circumstances, consider utilizing their services.

I am a lawyer, and yes I have a vested interest in having e-commerce owners use a lawyer. However, that does not mean I am in business to rip people off. I am a professional who understands that clients need help and provide that help at reasonable rates. I believe that most lawyers fall into this class, although there certainly are many who don't.

In my opinion, getting references is the best way to judge a lawyer's credibility and worth. I am happy to give out references from happy clients (with their permission of course.) Beware using a lawyer who won't provide references.

If you are looking for a lawyer for web industry or for anything than all you have to do is to go online and search for it! Every Good law firm has its own website, and just by browsing over their website you will come to know about their specialized areas. Just go with the one that suits you best!

Ask the attorney for a list of references willing to discuss the lawyer's level of service and expertise.

Check the lawyer's track record for the kinds of legal work for which you'll need them. One way to do that is checking courthouse files where the lawyer does a majority of work.
