Here's a blog post that I think might be of interest. It's written by an analytics analyst looking at why some affiliates perform better. It's written for a merchant's perspective, but I think affiliates can get something from it, too.

I think combining analytics data with common sense can go a long way. When I was a newspaper publisher, I understood my readers better than my advertisers did. So I had a better idea as to what ads would be more effective than others. I would share that info with my advertisers (if they were designing their ads) or I would design the ads for them, accordingly. Since I had control over where in the paper I placed those ads, I could place them in sections were there would be stories that tied into those ads.

In affiliate marketing, affiliates usually grab whatever creatives are already there. If you think a change in ad design would better suit your site visitors, talk to your advertisers and see if they'd be willing to put up some new creatives for you to use.

I am constantly telling my affiliates that we're happy to do custom work for them to help sell our sell our stuff. To date I have not had one taker. This has really surprised me. With just a few easy tweaks to our core stuff we can both benefit. Having some additional A/B stats to actually show them might help them come out of their shells. :-)
