My PC prompted me today to update to the latest version of Microsoft Defender Beta2 (previously called Microsoft Anti-Spyware).

Update went well and quick scan afterwards found and removed Hotbar from my working, protected PC - looks like the latest version is continuing to improve.

Love it.

Been using the defender beta since the laptop got thrashed a few weeks ago.
Haven't had any problems since.
Have enabled real time protection but still don't know how I can get it to show an icon on my taskbar. I keep freaking out not seeing it on and have to go check to make sure it's running lol
The old version had that toolbar icon. I know it's a little thing but I like seeing it.

taskbar icon...

+Launch it via desktop or Start menu shortcut (it's very likely running already, but in stealth mode - which is the problem for you - and was for me!)
+click Tools
+then Options
+then Scroll almost to bottom (section called "Real-time protection options")
+change "Choose when the Windows Defender icon appears in the notification area" to Always
+click Save
+close the app

Cool little fortress brick wall icon in sys tray from there ever after (you may have to restart, I forget, but it's there for me now always quietly reminding me I'm safer with it)

Great tool and no one can beet the 20.00/yr forr 3 license copy price. No need for the cookie crunching, link blanking Norton. Just install on a cleaned machine. It doesn't co-exist with AVG and some other anti-virus programs or the Zonealarm firewall.

something this important, they should default it to on.

and MS calling the system tray the "notification area"...

but they'll change it's default soon cuz people will be asking for tech support...
