I'm trying to drive traffic with both unique & syndicated contact and curious to know what tools out there can let you know where an article originated from? (i.e. where it was first published online)

the inc.com article references the businessinsider.com article and posting dates are visible. Hovering over the "Read the article at: Business Insider." link shows a referrer in the URL - ?partner=incmagazine

Perhaps it is syndicated/paid for content...

I don't think there is good so far, because we search depend on search engines, but there are websites who blocked search engines. So, no good way to do that I think.

if that is visible this should be it. otherwise google a snippet of the article and see if it does not come up somewhere else.

I've had pretty good success with searching on a phrase enclosed in quotation marks. A lot of people just copy the text without making any effort to revise it, so this can be quite effective. I suggest that you start with phrases at the beginning of the article.
