Actually, I was wrong: if Amazon doesn't file the referendum signatures and the governor vetoes to deal bill, then the original bills are still in effect.

So a tax is here or coming one was or another.

But if Amazon does file the signatures and the gov signs the bill, the referendum is off and the bill goes into effect?

Am I understanding that right?
No. If no referendum and the bill is vetoed, the Affiliate-Nexus tax law is IN effect - Things will be just as they were on July 1.

If Amazon files the signatures, the referendum is on unless the governor signs the bill. Signing the bill will void the referendum and is the only process to avoid imposition of the tax for the next year.

It is beyond me that they could get enough signatures for a referendum then have a governor sign a bill that voids it. Seems to violate due process but I am not schooled on that part of the law.

Unfortunately, in our Golden State, the legislature can do pretty much whatever it wants, whenever it wants. That includes re-passing bills to void upcoming referendums. Whether it should be done or is good politics is one question, but it's completely legal.

Maybe it's not such a Golden State after all.

Oh Amazon...sigh... I received my official "goodbye check" today. At least they payed me the $11.66 :-) Didn't waste anytime closing my account online, that's for sure. Will be interesting to see what happens here in our Golden State - lol.
