In a few months, ICANN is set to start allowing domains that have brand-name extensions, like those in the thread title. Organizations such as the Association of National Advertisers are up in arms.
ICANN Domain Plan: Brands Headed for Disaster? The article discusses the issues of cyber poaching and the possibility of domain name registration costs going up to the hundreds of thousands of dollars per registration.

Well there's lots of issues with this, besides the lawsuits trying to stop this. I think the application fee alone is like $185,000. What person not associated with Pepsi is going to pay that? Knowing they will lose it when they get sued by Pepsi, costing them even more money in attorney fees.
Then you have the other new ones .nyc, .film, .berlin, .green, .sport, .music etc. Again it cost alot just for the application fee and then to run it, even more. There are other extensions out there that you can still get great keywords like .us, .me etc. Then as somebody who might want to buy one of those domains, how much will they cost a year? These others I can get for under $10 some just a few dollars. What if it's in the hundreds per year? Might be good for some SEO but that's about it. It's just an ICANN money grab. |
