Hi 2busy and Everyone,
I am new here. I just would like to ask. Should I avoid all these merchants or is there a way I can do some research to find out if the one I am interested to promote their products are "clean". Thank you in advance for any suggestion or help. Orninc |

Hi orninc
![]() Welcome to the forum ![]() This area (ParasiteWare) is the part of the forum where you'll find the most information about this subject. Well, you can read up there in the black area below the nasty lookin bug what all is included in this section. As to your question: "Should I avoid all these merchants or is there a way I can do some research to find out if the one I am interested to promote their products are "clean"." Ideally that would be good.....but depending on what type of products you're interested in promoting, that may not be possible. Best thing to do is make a search here at the forum for the merchant you're interested in, read the results and you'll be able to get an idea if they are clean or not. You'll be able to learn quite a bit about them. Depending on which particular product you want to promote....it can be possible that they are clean just depends on who it is.Also, make some general searches for things like "toolbars, parasites, clean program, etc. and you should get some results. This will keep you busy for a while. There are other things to be aware of in a program, too but I don't want to overwhelm you with lots of stuff. To get started tho read as much as you can in this area and make those searches. Then if you still have questions, just ask and people will help![]() Good luck ![]()

I don't get it, what's wrong with Ebates and these merchants?

Howdy all,
As a merchant, I too am very curious about EBates and UPromise. Some big players in the affiliate world have said these guys have cleaned up their act - is this the case? I am about to launch a new program and some consultants have wanted to push us in CJ and SAS based solely on the fact that Ebates and UPromise are there. Can someone help? Thanks! Corri |

Part of my screening process is to check to see if "you" are in with any of them. If you are, I need go no further in considering you. I'll move on to another program - quite possibly a competitor.

I already know about the fact that if affiliates know we're working with Ebates, UPromise, etc., they'll avoid us like the plague.
The problem lies with the fact that our new VP of Internet Marketing is friends with some of the big players in the affiliate world. The VP and one of these folks (who shall remain nameless) were having a conversation about our decisions regarding trying to decide on a network (CJ or SAS). This person told my VP that the upshot of working with CJ is Ebates and the upshot with working with SAS is Upromise (or the reverse _ I may have that backwards). I was pretty much in shock! Like I said before, I denied Ebates' application last time I managed a program based strictly on what I knew from talking to other affiliates and being a part of the ABW community. Our VP was very confused when we then had a conversation afterwards and I informed her about my past knowledge of Ebates, etc. and parasiteware and its affects on affiliates (not consumers). I'm trying desperately to find details - forum postings, blogs, articles, etc. - that I can show her so she'll understand. Thanks for everyone's responses so far but please post more info, if you have it! C. |

Ebates and Upromise are both in CJ. SAS has neither.
Try this thread to see how those types of programs hurt not only affiliates, but actually reduce the ROI of the merchant: http://forum.abestweb.com/showthread.php?t=89073 Donuts put that together a while back but it is still a pretty good overview of the damage those types of programs cause to the industry.

Hi There,
I'm a new AM, started in September, I noticed that my company is on the list. I've just done some scary reading and expired eBates from my program (effective May 1) How do I get my company off the list? |

Unfortunately, because not enough merchants/AM's/consultants care, the sites like Ebates and Upromise are harder for the smaller, clean ones to compete with because their sales are higher and so are their commissions. Its a vicious cycle, but I for one, would like to thank anyone who will not work with these parasitic sites.

Without going into detail I can state that your VP has wrong information regarding the ShareASale Network. If you have questions regarding what we do or don't allow please feel free to email me at brian@

Brian,
For some reason, I am just seeing your post now. The next few days are decision time for us so whatever information you can pass my way would be great. Maybe I had some things confused so my apologies. I think it stands that you don't let any toolbar affiliates in your network now but this policy is about to change in 2009 (if I've been following the other threads correctly, right?) If you want to have this discussion offline, let me know. Thanks! Corri |

The thieves at eBates (and the networks supporting them) have been stealing our commissions for years. Do you think because somebody has decided to switch from Moe Money Maker to a "non-downloaded reminder tool very soon" we're going to work with the merchants who were supporting them or new merchants. NO WAY!
Read the thread at Shareasale regarding toolbars and read what eBates said about their new applications. "The new, cutting-edge toolbar will provide a superior customer experience and better access to personalized special offers without actually being downloaded to your computer. As soon as the toolbar is ready for use, you will be among the first to know" Stealing a little bit less from other affiliates or merchants doesn't make them clean. |

Hi Zeus,
Can you pin point that article a little more I there are 14 pages on that link? My search didn't turn up anything |

Zeus has it summed up quite well. If I see a merchant on Ebates, Upromise, FatWallet, etc., I will not consider promoting them. There are too many good merchants out there who are not willing to compromise their ethics to work with an outfit known to poach (my) customers. Sorry for the rant. Now where is that "beating a dead horse smiley?"

In this thread Shareasale is trying to convince merchants and affiliates, a toolbar is an innocent application. eBates is switching to a toolbar to look more respectable (and avoid to be detected by anti-adware/spyware software) but the problem is still the same. A toolbar is just an other reminder like MMM or TopMoxie applications. Different technologies but same purpose, overwriting cookies and tagging merchants sales as commissionable sales.

thanks for your patience for dealing with a newbie AM, I get the concept of parasiteware/toolbars, I agree that stealing clicks is bad. I am not trying to defend ebates. In fact I expired them from my program after reading this thread. When they called me and asked why, I pointed them to this thread. I asked them point blank if they had software or a toolbar. They replied that they don't have any software at all. Are you saying that they lying to me and are using toolbars / or software? I need ammunition to defend my decision to keep them out of the program |

You don't make a newbie feel very welcome. I spent hours reading about parasite-ware. I expired ebates from my program when I read this thread. I expired someone who was driving revenue because I agree that stealing clicks is wrong. When they called to ask why, I flat out asked them if they had any software or toolbar. They said no. After an hour and a half of reading/searchin I asked Zeus a follow up question because I wanted to know if ebates was lying to me. How exacly does this mean that I don't Quote:

Ya know - this forum is about the friendliest place I know - it annoys me when new members begin to point fingers at VALUED long time members and complain that they don't feel welcome. I was reading your posts before this last one and feeling for your confusion. Now I just want to say "Get over yourself!" Bill was in no way attacking you or your ethics. This is a forum for mature business people - if you jump on the defense like a 3 year old, you'll get only what you give out and that's not gonna help your business. Rally on - stick around, build relationships and learn. Also, know that anyone who bothers to answer a post you make is trying to HELP you. |
