I'm considering moving to Florida.

How safe is Florida for affiliates?

Marathon Man (1976)
Laurence Olivier to Dustin Hoffman: "Is it safe?"

He didn't know. No one really knows.

Insofar as nobody will chase you down the street with a machete... probably... Florida is safe. But as far as the affiliate tax situation? Who knows, at this point?

I still remember that exact torture scene. Great movie.

I guess if the only thing we talk about are good movies from the 70s, it's relatively safe.

So it looks like nothing is in the books and the state is solid red.

Oregon has no sales tax at all, meaning it would probably be safer. Problem is you'd be in Oregon.

And don't forget, they've got flying cockroaches the size of a volkswagon - palmetto bugs. One time, I dropped a brick on one, and it picked it up and threw it back at me. Maybe Florida isn't the best choice after all...

Don't forget alligators along the freeways.

Alligators in swimming pools, too. Some one in my old neighborhood told a story of finding an alligator on her car.

Oooh, and don't forget the hurricanes. There are five seasons in Florida, not four: Spring, Summer, Hurricane, Autumn and Winter.

I used to live in FL. The crime rate is actually higher in Orlando than Miami where I lived. Hurricanes are not bad because you have a warning and can leave. The weather overall is fantastic. As for the advertising tax I would not say you are guaranteed to be safe.

I see you totally avoided mentioning the alligator issue.

I've always wondered if they ever eat any of the alligators?

I've heard rumors of underground mutant cockroach vs. alligator deathmatches, put on by retirees down in Coral Gables, but never investigated it myself.

I've been telling that joke since I was living in Orlando, upwards of five years ago. There's a bit of truth to it actually - I really did drop a brick on a palmetto bug, and while it didn't throw it back at me, it did survive unharmed and run away.

This makes Florida very attractive.

I'll take alligators anytime of the week versus a scary congressman deciding my future. I heard alligators taste like chicken. Not sure what a congressman taste like...might be able to tell in a few day ;-)

Sincerly,
Hannibal L.

Been keeping my eye on this thread....

When I was a lad, living in CA, my Great, Great Aunt Edith ( who lived to be over 100 ) picked us up and hit I-10 East to Jacksonville FL....

We burnt up a set of tires trekking across Texas and finally got to Jacksonville, where my Mother's side of the family originated...

All I can remember is the sound of Locusts and a smell that I can still smell in my memory today!

OMG palmetto bugs are scary. As for the coackroaches I saw them in Tallahassee and my method was to spray them with anything handy like Lysol lol. DelSol isn't going to go live in the Everglades that is where the alligators are! I give Miami my seal of approval born and raised and love it.

Steph, the alligators are everywhere! I lived in Boca Raton and there were alligators in the lakes behind my house and the lakes near several places where I worked. The only waterway where I never saw them was the intracoastal. In fact one of my neighbors had a dog that nearly lost a leg to an alligator.

Oregon has no sales tax, but 9% income tax. Yuck.

Washington might be a more interesting play because as far as I remember they have no income tax, and about 7% sales tax with higher taxes on property and motor vehicles.

What interests me about Washington State though is that Amazon is based there. So I don't see a lot of incentive for Washington State to institute an "Amazon tax". But who knows...
