How to use the Groupon API with your PID

So for those of you who like our widget but:
  • think you can do better (hey I know you're out there)
  • would like to create something more customized for your site
  • would like to have access to data for multiple markets at once

I thought it would be helpful to give you the information on how you add your CJ PID to the API coding in order to allow for tracking. The API allows you to do all those things (and I'm sure more-ya'll are creative) even without being an Affiliate. However, we'd like to see you paid- so here's how you ensure that you are:

First, you will need to apply for your API key at: Groupon API

Once you have your API key, you can find documentation, instructions, and links to the developers forum here: Groupon API Documentation

Once you get set up and are able to pull the Groupon API, you'll use this CJ link to pre-pend the API URL that is returned.

The encoded API URL replaces API_URL in the following link:
HTML Code:
http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-YOURCJPID-10804307?url=API_URL
Please note that you will also need to replace YOURCJPID with your CJ PID (Publisher ID).

If you've implemented the API correctly, the link structure will look like the one below (this is a Groupon for Minneapolis that we'll use in this example, and YOURCJPID will be replaced with your own PID):
HTML Code:
http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-YOURCJPID-10804307?url=http://www.groupon.com/deals/conga-latin-bistro-minneapolis-st-paul/
It's as easy as that!

As always, let us know if you have any questions, or if you'd like to show off your awesome work!

Question API Key

Thanks for posting Groupongal, this is very helpful!

I'm attempting to secure a Groupon API key for my site. I log in to my Groupon account, click the "Get my API key", and see the message that a verification email has been sent to my e-mail address. But the e-mail never shows. I double checked the address and spam folder. Nada.

Could you help me out?

Great question. Every once in awhile, the email doesn't go through. The first thing I would check before requesting support help would be to log into your Groupon Account. Once you are logged in, you can click on "My Stuff".

You'll want to click on "My Account". On the "My Account" page, you should actually be able to see DEVELOPER API TOKEN- the number to the right (that big long string) is your key!

Thanks,
Julia
P.S.
If you've done this, and still need help please feel free to DM me.

Question on api

I jsut joined the groupon affiliate program today & I love that you guys have an api for the deals.

But I was wondering about two things
+ if there is a sale that came in through one of my links, is it possible to see which links refered that sale through the API?
+ I am also putting together a newsletter can I simply put a link to the deals in the email?

Thanks

Hi Sarno-

To answer your first question-Implementation of the API has it's own ADID that can be used to identify in your CJ reports. The ADID in the info above is:10804307

Other links you use through our CJ account, have their own ADID that help us and you track what is working and what is not working. It is always in the tracking information and can be found through reports that you can run on CJ.

In regards to your second question. We'd prefer to see your newsletter format (feel free to send a copy to affiliate@groupon.com. Please DO NOT add us to your list) so we can feel comfortable CAN SPAM is being complied with, especially if it is not a compilation of your website's posts. Automatic RSS feed emails DO NOT need to be approved.

Question URL shortening

Groupongaljuj,

Thanx for detailed explanation. Very helpful!

I'm building a deal aggregator and I have just 2 questions:

1. Can I use URL shortening services (bit.ly, etc) to shorten
Groupon aff. links and then post those links on my twitter account or Facebook Pages?
(Will I get paid if someone buys Groupons through those "twitter links"? )

2. If a person has already bought on Groupon (and Groupon has his/her email)
will I get paid if that person buys something again on Groupon website but this time through my aff.link? (not the first time)

Thank You.

Hey NewGuy!

Why don't you email me (in signature below) and we can go over your questions there. Please make sure you give me your user name here on Abestweb.

Thanks

Hi Kissadeal-

can you send me an email (info below) describing what you'd like to do, as well as your website? I think I'll need to pull in my API folks on this to help you!

Happy Fourth

Is there anyway to generate/append my CJPID to the API/XML feed for automated updates for ingestion into Wordpress?

I got the XML->WORDPRESS down. Just need URLS to give it.

in this example I see

$99 for Varicose- or Spider-Vein Treatments at North Bridge Vein Care in Arlington ($375 Value)

first deal url is: North Bridge Vein Care Deal of the Day | Groupon Boston

so for the affiliate to work i need to prefix each deal url with:

http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-YOURC...idge-vein-care

replacing YOURCJPID with my CJPID of course

right?
