CJ sent this today and asked Tim for permission to repost:

Hello,

Our publisher, FatWallet (CID [Removed]), wanted our clients to be aware of how they will deal with the internet tax law that was signed yesterday. Below is a note from the CEO of FatWallet which I am sharing so you can address any questions that may come from your advertisers.

"We expect Governor Quinn to sign into law HB 3659 today. Understanding that the signing of this legislation was a strong possibility, we have been making contingency plans and will be relocating out of Illinois prior to July 1st when the legislation goes into effect. We value all of our merchant relationships and will be doing what is necessary so that the actions in Illinois will not cause termination of any of those relationships."

So it's official. FatWallet isn't just considering leaving Illinois. They're doing it.

And just like that, Illinois loses another 55 taxpaying employees and a business that doubtless pays a considerable amount of corporate state taxes, property taxes, etc.

And they're still not going to collect a nickel of tax money from Amazon, Overstock, or most of the other companies they were targeting with their nexus legislation.

Michael and the people that will not move with them will end up on the unemployment line and it will cost the state money.

Great points Michael and Vinny. I guess Illnois is going to learn the hard way. BTW: what Illonis has done should make front page news next week.....just as much as the union stuff did in Wisconson. this is an outrage.

I came to America by choice. The main reason (besides the beautiful women...ha..ha) was because it incarnated the entrepreneurial spirit, in the eyes of the world. Most people would not believe that, in the 21th century, businesses are literally being forced to relocate between states because of politicians. Some might expect that in Russia or Congo, but not here.

The level of ineffectiveness of our government is worrisome. What we are seeing with these hypocritical "affiliate tax law" is just another sign of how dysfunctional our government has become. Given the tsunami of debt piling up, with no end in sight, things will get worse before they get better.

Make no mistake about it, politicians like Pat Quinn know exactly what they are doing when they pass these laws and the consequences it will have on a few of their constituents.

Best wishes of strength to all the Illinois affiliates!

Prop's to Tim for doing what is right for his employees and his business. He's one of the good ones and the state he chose to do business in just effectively told him that they have no need for dedicated, ethical professionals who create dozens of well paying jobs there. Great message Quinn.

...is this not a real live example of "two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do?"

Broke state governments = increased tax collection efforts = unintended consequences of dumb legislation

Hooray!

Nice find, Chuck. PMA should send copy of that article to every legislator in any state discussing tax nexus for affiliate marketers.
