Yes, we will. The reason being - who out of those who kept their URL private, is going to come forward and complain of being abused if they know every Pranav in creation is going to be picking over their site code?

Its about as likely as a person complaining of rape in a country where they'll get stoned for adultery.

And if you 'still can't believe she has done this' - well, I can't believe anyone would do this. But they do.

Some people give themselves away with every word they type and some are so polite they get away with blue murder. Could be me, could be you, could be anyone.

Except it couldn't be me.

One of my curiosities here, is that I wonder how the victim (if I may call him that), knew his site was copied? If this happens to me, I would love to know. So who/how did 2+2 get put together?

I would guess ... Checking different keywords in the SE's and seeing the same site next to yours alot.

Just a guess.

Fred,

It is probably best not to give that information away. It may help yoy to protect your site but it also give a thief new information on how to steal your site.

One way they may have found it is something that I have begun to do. A fellow web desinger told me how he found out someone had copied his site. He puts some special characters (eg. yourname56743) in his meta tags and then later does a search on the web. It works for him. So far I have not found anything, so don't know if no one has copied me, or they were smart enough to remove the special word I put in.

I'd like to elaborate a bit, when I said ..."Meta Tags and links were stolen and SOME site design." -- that meant to include the entire content of at least one page being cut&paste with affiliate ID replacements and some minor color and wording changes!

There were many different examples of the thievery.

Well it appears that she really did read the old threads here; especially the ones dealing with site copiers.

hi haiko,
you said...
""">>>is ABW the net police?<<<
Kinda funny question from someone who proclaims to be with an "affiliate programs that suck" site, notwithstanding, yes we try! As I said, how can we demand morals and ethics from merchants when we can't even throw the first stone."""

i sold the APTS a long time ago....

you said:
"""Let tell you that this board went live on Aug 3, 2001 at 3:36pm the day CJ removed the building site traffic and Logo / Banner Review forum, so it has always been set up for it's intention. It's not like I'm using "camaroproject" as a site to sell blinds and wallpaper."""

that one flew right past me! huh???

you said:
"""Regarding your statement about my recent "anger" I banned Fred because he violated the TOS, Shrimp because he called someone a B*tch (numerous times) and I banned rewardme because what she did was proven. There wasn't any anger from my side, but I assume from yours since your not in the loop, or even better ... started it."""

the anger thing was just a joke in response to someone else mentioning it

(we are all angry here!)

oh and by teh way, im very pleased about the shrimp termination because i just found out he is the same person flaming me and saying im a porn master of at revenews and they had even signed my main email address to NUMEROUS porn lists!

can you imagine!!

You might find something in your logs -- if someone copies your page and some of the links still point to your page, someone might click on them and that will reflect in your logs.

As someone who has had a c*ntent site (or portions thereof) stolen more times than I can count, I can tell you there are a multitude of ways for discovering theft and many of the ways are dependent on the thief's stupidity (or carelessness).

The funniest one, however, was when one person copied my ENTIRE site, made some MINOR changes (color, added his own logo, some text added, some removed), and then submitted his site to be included in my directory on the topic!

My favorite means of discovering a site thief, however, is reports via loyal users. People who love my site and are on the lookout for me.

I'm guessing a lot of theft happens that I never know about, but given the volume I DO know about, I can also tell you that it's often just a matter of freak chance when I find out.

Great idea.

I once caught someone who copied a site verbatim because of a typo. Oddly enough, it was the merchant whose affiliate I was who did the copying.

I think that's really important !

Whew, started reading this thread at 3:30 am & it's 4:30 am now.

What gives me joy is the news that 1 member has been banned. LOL, they asked for it .....

Sitecopying is real bad..... but gosh I've never been able to think about it much...
One thing for sure, if that guy starts getting half my traffic, then I'll want to kill him ; )

Well, it's been a long discussion here & I hope more info (url etc.) is shared by Haiks & gang. and that rewardme can say something more, innocent or a goodbye ; )

the irony here is that there are all kinds of free website template places! ive used them lotsa times!

sometimes you can just go take a look around and make mods from these templates and give it your own special brand of lovely!

The real irony is that she probably wouldn't have needed even that (templates, etc.) She was quite capable of producing a very nice site herself.

She must have been particularly enamored of the drop-down menus and stuff.

Lauren, that is not Ironic ... what is the kick in the head was that she took all (and I mean ALL) the info needed to take one of those templates and make it sing ... the problem was that she stole, instead of working ... that was the problem ... she asked, we answered and she stole.

That is my MAJOR problem and why this happened.

Now, I want to say that Sanfords.net has TONS of non-original material. Most of it is in the public domain and can be found on hundreds of Pagan sites through out the internet. They are things like the Wiccan Rede, Pagan jokes, commonly accepted color correspondences and so forth. This is information that it took me years to collect as I tried to grow in understanding and that I wish to share with my unique presentation. I wish I had found my site when I started to study Wicca. It would have been so much easier. I really had to dig and scrape for information back then.

Also, Spots graphics archive which has been around for about seven years of course does not contain original material.

I the entire time I have been on the net, I have had about five requests for removal or accreditation. Of course, we complied immediately.

So, I want to be on record saying right out front that I did NOT write the Wiccan Rede nor did I write much of the other information found on my site.

Anyone who has a problem with that, too bad. The site is staying as it is.

People give away those scripts for free all over the web. There's really no need to steal 'em.

I've looked all over the umpteen pages of this and the other thread and I still don't get why...

Deelz,

Which drop down menus are you referring to? I haven't heard that mentioned in the threads before.

SSanf,

We are not talking about "un" original material ... we are talking about copying ... it is a diff animal.

Just your basic pull-down menus. Nothing fancy, but a lot spiffier than what was there before. The entire site was "new" build. Not so much as a 1-pixel ghost of the old one.

SSanf - You gathered, sorted, and assembled bits and pieces to create something that is "you". Every artist, writer, musician, designer, etc. does this to some degree. There is nothing new under the sun. For example every lick that Jimi Hendrix ever played, was already used by somebody, somewhere, before. But he will always be recognized as an innovator, because he presented it in his own special way. There are only so many chord and note combinations possible. There's only eight notes in a scale, and everybody only has those eight notes to work with. So it is with everything else.

Well, if I started totally from scratch, I guess I would have to create a new religion. And somehow, I don't feel qualified.
