"A Florida man accused of sending huge volumes of spam has been fined an unprecedented $11.2 billion by a US district court.

A lawsuit filed two years ago by the owner of a small Iowa-based ISP, CIS Internet Services, alleged that James McCalla had sent out more than 280 million spam e-mails with return addresses pointing to CIS."

"A Miami company, Rockin Time Holdings, turned up in four lawsuits -- including the Alabama and Iowa cases.

It was run by Damon Decrescenzo, 28, considered the No. 2 spammer in the world, according to the Register of Known Spam Operations, or ROKSO. The list is maintained by The Spamhaus Project, a respected London-based anti-spam group"

Looks like an ISP from Iowa took them to court and pushed and pushed until the case was won.

Bravo to CIS, the isp in Iowa, for going after them!!!

Where was the FTC in all of this... they told congress they're doing a good job recently... what a farce.

Imagine how much money this victimized ISP had to pay to pursue this matter!

At least some action. Great. This ISP deserves an award.

They shouldn't fine him any money at all.

Instead, they should just force him to read 11 billion erectile dysfunct1on emails against his will.

So, when does the inevitable bankruptcy come onto the docket?

Far from being an economic "death penalty," it'd be more like 10 years of middlin' luck. The size of the bankruptcy filing would probably make future creditors think it was a typo...

I like Elbow's proposed punishment. The spams he has to read should all have that randomized gibberish text at the bottom, too, in order to ensure that he doesn't just memorize the pitch and repeat it in a mindless stupor

While he is sitting in jail. The monetary fines alone just don't seem to deter. Look as Spamford. He just switched over to adware/spware after the FTC nailed him on the spam. Wonder what he's doing now after the FTC slapped him again for spyware. ::

Its more of a feel good story unless they get him to do what Elbow proposes or maybe if the ISP cancels his debt. Isn't cancelled debt equal to income? If so, IRS will give this dude a hard time.

I think they should have serious jail time, like 5-10 years and a fine that is 10 times what they earned. The sentence should be a punishment and not just the cost of doing business. Bankrupcy should not be available to them for this either.

i think that's a big motivation for a lawsuit.

if you get spam emails from individuals, chances are, they weren't sent by the owner of the email address.

i myself have received several spam emails, supposedly sent from my other email account, but which i didn't send. i don't even do email marketing at this time!

so it serves them right, big time.

by the way, i did email my isp to complain, just to let them be aware what's going on. but no, my isp is not cis.

In the armed forces, the "crank" is the low ranking newbie guy who works in the mess hall washing dishes, not quite senior enough yet to be involved in handling the food.

Now that this spammer was banned from the Internet, he might be washing dishes!
