Actually it appears they lost 19,718 Non-Profit Causes. Nov. 08 shows 30,164 and Mar 09 shows 10,446.

Something is not right. Either the numbers are just made up or the NPO's who have a reputation to maintain have been leaving them in droves and merchants who rely on others to help them understand affiliate programs are being misled.

At this point, would anyone really be surprised if they were falsifying donation info?

Maybe someone is overwriting their cookies?

Seriously though, that's a curious set of numbers.

Perhaps they make the donation once a year?

When they make the contribution doesn't affect the actual dollar amount.

They have already been paid on the Q4 sales, and they have already updated "supporters" (augmented) contribution levels.

So apparently it's not updated annually, nor even quarterly we have it well documented of how often and what has been updated.

A quick example of how they have updated the contributions, incase you doubt me ...

Front page listing (today)

Click on their names (today) you'll see:

Those contributions (on the contributor detail page) are about $10K different from the FP listing ... it's all funny numbers ... the proof is there and blatant, once again.

It seems as though they probably re-classified many schools from non-profits to schools (my guess). I searched my zip code, and no public schools in my city participate, just the private schools. Good, at least the public schools here aren't part of this mess.

No idea why they haven't updated the Contributions. The increase in number of merchants is sad.

First, holy crap 19k in less than 3 years from one person? If you figure that is only maybe half the commissions earned then what the heck is that person buying online? This is going a bit off topic and maybe should be split.

If we're talking about thousands of dollars a year per user 'donated' to charities, who gets the tax benefit of that? Does the one cause get to take that as a deduction against their (linkshare) earnings or do they provide something to the user that allows them to take the deduction?

It is a little off topic but I looked at that person's favorite merchants and they are all large travel sites. Maybe they have a business booking all their travel through onecause.

Per the 4 merchants listed, they pay $1 to 1.25%. If you take the 1.25% contribution on every dollar earned that means this person spent over 1.5 million on travel the last three years. More likely they would have had to spend well over 2 million and in reality close to 3 million to achieve this with the commission split with one cause. That seems like an awful lot of travel in less than three years.

I suppose they could run a business that books travel for people... although wouldn't they want their commissions as a business owner? Perhaps they work in the travel department of a major corporation, but then most corporations have direct deals with travel providers and wouldn't have agents shopping online.

The numbers just seem inflated, especially if it is all travel related and I still want to know about the tax implications.

I doesn't surprise me at all that a thief would lie and cheat. One Cause and Linksteal are thieves and cheats. A thief is a thief and a cheat is a cheat. But One Cause and Linksteal aren't the only cheats and thieves involved in all this. Any school, charity or organization that is aware of what these criminals are up to are also thieves and cheats.

If you buy stolen merchandise from your neighbor and are aware it is stolen, you are committing a crime. When caught, you will be arrested and punished.

This is no different. Those who accept this stolen money and are aware that it is stolen are committing a crime. We should do a better job of letting the schools, charities and organizations that accept this stolen money know where the money came from.

After making them aware of this, if they still take the money, they are no better than One Cause and Linksteal and should be treated as such. Thieves and cheats.

I suspect they get it which means their income is probably offset by their large "tax deductions". Searched their help and it doesn't cover it. So either nobody asked before or they don't want to bring it up.

Newest Screenie, a few changes in less than 12 hours today:

1 Merchant less
47 more supporters
3 less causes
3 more schools

But, once again ... ZERO change in "Donations"

I worked 7-8yrs with few NGO and these type of organizations...

They spent $100 for a good cause and spent $500 to advertise that they did something nice... and in this way they get more 1000s of $s.

there is a very thin line between good and bad.

NGO
N - No need to pay tax on black money
G - Good Masks for Ugly Faces
O - Outsource Feeling and Causes

When we give some one, We must say thanks too, He/She gave us oppoturnity to be a giver, and giving without expectation is the biggest joy we can feel.

Shot who? Wha?

Read www.linksteal.com and see that they purport to donate a portion of the commissions to the causes since Thanksgiving the amount they present that they gave hasn't changed yet all the other numbers have changed almost daily and virtually in real time. This thread is about the fact that they have specifically stopped updating that total donation number to allegedly obfuscate the true value of commissions that they allegedly overwrote and allegedly stole during Q4 2008 and Q1 2009.

No one makes thousands with this sh!t except the thieves, the liars who support them, and the company that owns them - Rakuten who also owns Linkshare - a complete conflict of interest.

* I use the term allegedly because I don't want to be sued, the facts are clear as day.

Today:

In this past week:
Lost two schools
36 More causes
373 more supporters
1 less merchant

But, yet again ... NO new donations!

Pretty sad that a co that presents itself as a source of donations and markets themselves as such ... doesn't actually donate a dime in almost 5 months (that we know of) ... that just can't be right!

$211,544,991.00 11/14/2008
$210,358,020.27 1/17/2008 (as reported by them)

$ 1,186,970.73 Increase, divide that by 10 months and you get a monthly average of $118,967

So not taking into account the new toolbar and the PROVEN overwriting that was done and whatever they are doing today, they should at leastbe at $212,138,476.36 which is the addition of $593,485.36 (the $118,967 X 5 months), but the number stays steady at $211,544,991.00 HMMMMMM

$118,967 a month in donations would mean annual donations of $1,427,604

How in the world did they get to the $211 Million figure?
Magic? Slotting Fees? HOW?

The next question - if they they give away half of what they earn, that would mean they make $1,427,604 --- why in the world would Rakutan buy them? Come On, that can't possibly pay the rent for the 49th Floor in one of the most exclusive business addresses in Boston, much less the salaries - what kind of ROI can they derive from these numbers

It's just amazing how they can get away with things. Don't they think anyone notices? Good catch Haiko.

I think they are pulling numbers out of the hat to not pay IRS taxes.

I wonder how many people actually do a search on Google to see if there is any negative info about a toolbar before they download. If so... it is pages like these that need to rank well in G, I see mellie's site doing great.

I read the FAQ's:

When and how often are contribution checks mailed?

Contribution checks for your cause or school are sent 45 days after the end of each fiscal quarter, provided your cause or school earned a minimum of $25 in contributions.

But then again, it wasn't changed since November, we have had more then a full quarter why hasn't it changed.
