<blech>More social engineering.

How will this effect marketers? Will the website that just updated a product be shown higher?

Search: iPhone 5

The newest pages are not what I'm looking for.

Now do the search on Bing. Much better...

Interesting that I've had the exact opposite experience these last few days ... went looking for some information on MySQL issues related to some hosting upgrades, and was served up posts from 2005.. one as far back as 2001.

With the exception of the main MySQL & PHP sites, the first few pages were full of useless (and unhelpful) forum discussions that were years old.

And I know for a fact there are plenty of tech blogs that cover the topic very well... not one of them to be found.

"freshness" means commercial $$$ serps that G can manipulate to make more money for themselves.

On the other hand, look to see who's ranking 1st for terms like:
royal families in europe
indy 500 winning cars
Selling Autographs
68 mustang

...yeah I always think geocities when I think "fresh"

Geocities? I just checked one of your examples and I do see a Geocities site. All those sites were supposed to be shut down:

"On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files. When visitors go to your GeoCities web address after October 26, they'll see a page letting them know that GeoCities has closed."

I think there was a plus or premium version of geocities. I read somewhere that those pages get to stay up for five years or so?

I don't know if people still get to edit them, don't think so.

Ah ok, they talk about that on the page I linked too:

"Yahoo! GeoCities Plus customers: Although GeoCities has closed, your friends and family can still view your web site as usual. However, you can no longer access your files or update your pages with GeoCities tools. To update your site, you'll need to upgrade to Yahoo! Web Hosting. You can now upgrade at no extra charge for five years. See details or upgrade now.

When you upgrade, we'll redirect your GeoCities web address to your new domain automatically."

There's actually some good info on some of those pages like the indy 500 winning cars search. But it's not fresh tho, since it was last updated in 2008.

We'll see how this turns out. With my sites/wordpress, I usually don't do more than 1 post a day, I spread them out. I love the feature where you can pick the date the post goes live. So if I took a month vacation or something, I still have pages going live while I'm gone. One site I have a page going up every 5 days, other sites spaced differently. So all my sites always look "active"
