    Owning OWN
As some of you may know, I have built my portfolio of domain names around the word OWN. 4 years ago when my now expensive brain fart of an idea came to be, the concept seemed rather simple; claim ownership of a topic you love to talk about, build a web site around it and become the known expert in that field. Example: if you were an avid golfer perhaps you would build www.iowngolf.com or if you were an expert in wines you would "own" www.iownwine.com. Or, if you were like me, you would want to own www.iownthongs.com and eventually add good content to the site, throw some banners on it and hopefully make some pocket change while having some fun learning about affiliate marketing and promoting the topic you are passionate about.

I kind of got carried away buying a lot of domain names that begun with iown. I realized rather quickly that there was NO WAY I would be able to manage them properly. Knowing NOTHING about how to build a web site, I did design a pretty powerful web site builder that would allow me to do steps 1 and 2 but find myself now struggling doing steps 3 and 4 on my own (there’s that word again).

    For me the 4 steps to this process were;
Step 1 - was to buy the name and get it hosted.
Step 2 - was to actually get the domain "live" by building the site instead of parking it. Thought process there was something was better than nothing, even without content, until I could get to steps 3 and 4. (I found out I was wrong here - big time)
Step 3 - Find someone who actually likes golf, wine, baseball or whatever and GIVE that site to them so they can add the content and make it look act and feel like a REAL site with VALUE rather than the out of the box advertising site that my site builder generated.
Step 4 - help that owner make some money by understanding affiliate marketing and promoting the OWN brand along with the other iown sites through what someday would become the iownies network.

Adding content to hundreds of sites that you know nothing about is not only boring but downright impossible! Alot has changed in 4 years. Blogs took the place of personal websites, social networks are free and simple to use. Yet, here I am still sitting on all these OWN sites renewing them year after year, waiting for SOMETHING to happen.

The reason I am sharing all of this today is because today, SOMETHING might have happened. Today I learned, and I find it terribly amusing, that the Oprah Winfrey Network announced that they will be partnering with the Discovery Channel to launch ( drum roll please....) OWN.

Wow! How cool is that! Thoughts of dollar signs went rushing through my brain! Maybe my "iown" names will someday become more valuable as a result of this? Who knows? Would someone searching for OWN accidentally stumble upon my sites? Could I make what I own a part of what the big O owns? ( ok...thats a stretch but it doesn't hurt to still dream )

So the first thing I did was went to www.iown.com thinking I'd see Oprahs big smiling face but instead I saw a promo for the "White Girls want Black Stick" video that could be downloaded for FREE! HAH! Did someone from their camp even check? After laughing at that.....

Next, I did a search for any names that had OWN in them (I used to do this all the time but have not done it since buying most of my names) and found 1 that I quickly snatched up. www.own.am
Now perhaps good folks like Geno might know what the .am stands for and quite frankly I did not know or care until after I purchased the name. But, I figured if Oprah wanted THAT name instead of having to buy out the porn king who owns OWN.com I might be able to help her out. Hopefully, owning OWN in some capacity will have a payoff someday. Was I cybersquatting? Was I being unethical? Or, was I just continuing to protect my trademarked brand?

Anyway.....long story to bring me to my point. If anyone is interested in OWNING an OWN name and would be willing to make the site what it was intended to be.....give me a shout. I have plenty to choose from.

Thanks to Oprah, it might be a great time to OWN a site with OWN in it!

IOWNIE you are a smart person and you have made a good descision with those names and now with the Oprah name and my suggestion is to keep them. I saw that story on her too and cool prop for you.

I have kepted up with info over the years on how valuable domain names perhaps will be in future and if I were you, I would hold on to them until you get no less than six figures. I believe it could be like virtual land and real estate and one day valued as such. Which in reality already is when you consider some names going for $1M and higher that cost $10.00

I had a good offer a few years ago for my first domain www.nonstopbackup.com and we have few others, but I will not sell that one or other good ones for anything for less than $1M. If you think about it 1M is just compund interest to those that have 150M. I will wait for the wire transfer patiently.

Here is info I was reading few hours ago to motivate you:
    Oversee.net gets $150,000,000

see what this guy says from a pointed link on the above site

Wow - hope your wire comes through!. Definitely the articles are positive and quote some high profile examples.
Any idea why you did not register nonstopbackups.com when you thought the one without plural could be of such value ..
Just trying to understand the logic behind the values

You have some good ideas there, but it's too bad you don't OWN the OWN.com too, otherwise you probably would have been contacted by the "big O" team by now.

The funny part is that while I was reading this post, even before I got to read your "Step 4" paragraph, I was allready thinking of Oprah, and I was mentally making a reply post congratulating you on the way to millionaire row. :-)

Never stop dreaming, almost everything that have ever been invented, started with a dream first.
Thanks to Oprah, it might be a great time to OWN a site with OWN in it!

    Why not?

And I hope that you get some good ROI on any of your of domain names around the word OWN portfolio.

Who knows, maybe someday your "expensive brain part of an idea" pays off big, and you are the one who buy's my own old planned idea, for the minimum of $10Mill that I am willing to take into consideration this year.

    THANK YOU FOR THIS!
This was not only timely for me but also gave me the reassurance and validation I have been betting on. What an inspiration!
Anyone who owns domain names should read this article!
