    Hosting
I have been shopping for a resellers account to host my sites, and it seems many of the hosts out their are just reselling other services.

So, beyond rackspace, who owns or truly maintains their own stuff?
    Respectfully,

    John

Are you seeking to host multiple accounts on one server or are you actually wanting to resale the hosting.

Multiple account hosting is cheaper than reseller and there are a few good ones available.

I am looking to host/revive a bunch of sites, with the thought of reselling hosting in the back of my head.

My host is not a reseller, but they do allow multiple domain hosting with a dedicated IP for each full domain. Generally, they have been good.

I was very pleased with Servint as well as Liquidweb for Linux.

    Enterhost for Windows.

I, too, am looking to get new hosting. I need to move 600 sites over to at least 5 maybe 10 different IP's. Any suggestions will be appreciated and I will be more than happy to speak with you - just shoot me an email.

try looking into VPS accounts, or accounts like what bluehost has (depending on your needs) the reseller market is pretty grey ...at least do a tracert to see who is buying from who

    Major differences

vps accounts (Hsphere or WHM/CPanel usually)
    specific resources
    x gigs hardrive
    x megs ram
$30 and up a month (no cpanel and it's even less)
    Reselling an option
If you max resources your account will not be suspended
    ssh access

Multiple domain accounts like blue and gator
acts like a reseller for your accounts
reselling not an option (not a huge loss ~~ very competitive out there)
domains not as insulated as in VPS one is the main and others are folders within
If you eat the resources with one account all may be in trouble
the price is right 6 bucks a month and up :-)

    just my 3 cents

I have been very happy with Servint thus far. I have had two VPS units with them since March of 2005. That's three years next month and still truckin'.

I recently had an item I needed to change and wasn't sure how to do it. So early last Saturday I submitted a Trouble Ticket. The issue was fixed and I was responded to within 15 minutes. That was only my third ticket (in three years) - all of them were attended to with a half hour. Good folks.

    John,

We offer a reseller program. If you are interested in more information, pm me. BTW we have our own data center, I sit 200 feet from the door that leads to the server room....

Great quick summary of the differences between shared/reseller accounts and a VPS. One of the advantages of a VPS for some is that you get to configure your server pretty much any way you want. One of the disadvantages for others is that you have to manage stuff that you don't have to bother with in shared hosting, where the host does that for you.

The one other comment I'd add about VPS is that most providers do segregate memory usage - so you get x amount of RAM, usually with the possibility of bursting up to Y amount if other VPS packages on the same server aren't using all of their RAM at the moment. But most do not segregate CPU usage...which means that if you have a CPU-intensive script, you're still subject to being shut down for hogging the server. Only a few companies that I'm aware of also keep each VPS' CPU totally separate.

We normally do shared hosting, but if anyone wants a VPS or dedicated server, with or without management (meaning that we would take care of the tech stuff for you, so you can just run your site like you would in shared hosting), feel free to drop us a line.

I used theplanet for a while and it was good for my few servers at the time.

I've since outgrown that though, and have a whole rack with a dozen servers elsewhere, sounds like more than what you'd need though.

After really searching, I think I will break things up in a few directions.

The reseller/hosting market is like a plate of spaghetti, lots of paths crossed all looking for the meatball.
