I think you have to have at least 50 banners on a page for them to be effective.

Fifty animated in flash banners really command attention.

All animated and noisy. Noisy is good.

Those animated ads that hover over your page so you'll accidentally click on them... I can't remember what they're called.

Jokes aside, 125 x 125 banners seem to do ok...just don't go overboard and add 15 of them.

    I like 125 x 125

Banners of any size need a purpose within the web page and their decorative effect can bring attention to the text/content if done with design in mind.

Banners done at random/hodge podge/link farm are more likely to illustrate Jakob Nielsen's idea of "banner blindness."

Anything works well when used appropriately on a well designed site.

Nothing works well on a mile long sales page.

A page full of just banners would be a nightmare. A page with a few well placed banners may be effective.

Banners work. Some better than others. But as long as they are in line with the website's context and enhance the end user's online experience, they work.

Google adwords folks are the experts most able to answer this question. Basically they rotate text or image/banner/video ads in the content network based upon the best CTR. When multiple Google adwords campaigns serve up 80+ % image ads over text ads then you'd best learn how to make tasteful clickable image ads in all sizes. Google Video Ads are the best for branding as you get a large image... set into motion & sound.. by a interest click. A click that costs nadda till a second click request taking the viewer to the posted destination URL

I've found that 125x125 banners in side columns tend to work as long as they agree with the content of the page. I've also noticed that less is more, leads/sales that is. 1 banner by itself has typically been more successful than multiple banners, even if they all agree with the page content.

A loud banner of any even sides that breath commands attention.
