Horizontal Drop Down or Vertical Menu?
I have debated whether a horizontal dropdown menu at the top, leaving more room for content, ads, etc is better, or a vertical menu down the side linking to category pages is better. I have read that a vertical menu is better. Also, I think you have more flexibility in adding categories where as in a horizontal menu you are limited. What do you think? I can think of one of my sites where a horizontal menu at the top works well since I have limited categories and I need the room. But on a typical shopping site, one wants a fairly large number of categories - that is my concern here. What works better for shopping sites?

I like a detailed vertical with a major topic horizontal (without the drop down).

I agree 100% with Rhia. For a shopping site with a lot of categories, I like to see a vertical with major headings across the top. Other types of sites can get way with other styles of navigation, but I think for most shopping sites, it's best to stick with what works. Familiarity is good on a shopping site - shoppers don't want to spend time figuring out the site when they could be shopping.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! And Bob, great idea to look at those sites (as I just did and will do a few more times).

Yes, "both" are needed, I can clearly see. I have used both in the past. For some reason I got on this top horizontal menu kick - I think so I could include my 735 pixel AdSense ads which so many of my content-orientated sites rely on.
