February 13th, 2008, 10:54 AM #1Use real name or fake name?
Hello, brand new newbie here. Do you folks use your real name on your sites or do you use a fake name? What are the pros and cons of each? Thanks much.

I've recently switched to using my real name. I feel it builds your personal brand and makes things like speaking engagements and consulting easier.Jason Rosenbaum

Depends on your needs. Sometimes your real name is beneficial, sometimes using an alias is the better choice. Every situation needs to be evaluated on its own merits.Daniel M. Clark

Most of my sites use my real first name as my "post-author" name, but I don't advertise or highlight it at all. I doubt anyone cares unless you are trying to brand yourself or doing personal recommendations.

If you need to use your name on the site, use your real name. On some aff sites, there is no need or reason for a persons name.
I have been working to change my alias' on different sites to my real name.

It depends on the type of site and the material on it, as well as what kind of audience you're trying to appeal to.
I don't use any of my names--real or fake--on the majority my sites, except for my blogs and my very first site. And the only reason I put a name on my blogs is because when I didn't, it just called me "Admin," which is dull.
As for my first site, it's one of my only c*ntent sites, and my real name's also right in the URL. Since it's got quite a bit of non-ad material that's also noncontroversial (at least, not controversial enough to inspire people to violence, I would think), I want credit for writing it.
For my sales sites (which is most of them), what I write there is there to sell stuff, not increase my rep as a pitchwriter. So, the site name is the only name on them.
For my blogs I use screennames, not a pseudonym that anyone would mistake for a "real" name. They each get a different screenname.

Seriously, on my serious sites I use my real name in the about-us/contact area because they represent a serious business. If someone is plunking down two grand for a week's stay at a beach resort they have a right to know who the players are. Having real contact information adds credibility and may add a tiny bit of advantage in the SERPs.

One of the sites in my sig file is a domain with my "real" name in it for credibility with those who know me as a writer. The other sites have only my first name or no name at all.
Sometimes I use my alter-ego as an alias -- Old Fat Bald Guy.Generate more fake news.

I always use my real name. I want people to know who I am and what I do online.

I don't use my last name. You never know where or in what context your name will be used, so it could come back to haunt you one day in the SERPs.

Use your real name, there is no need to "hide" your name for any reason unless you are doing shady stuff that you should be doing.

I recommend you to use real name.
Because in business, especially in IM,
you have to build your relationship
with your customers.
Trust is the number one priority
you should stress on. If you use fake
name, some people might think that
you have something to hide.
If you want to take your business
to a very high level, you should use
your real name.
