    Interesting Parameter Passed, seemingly internally
So I was viewing our SM sales for today, and I found an internal referring page with "?general&gclid=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" where x was a long series of numbers and letters.

I don't know of anything on my site that would generate that variable at all, from the ? on.

Does anyone recognize the structure? Is it a Google Analytics thing?

It certainly looks like a Google Analytics suffix. I see it all the time in my trackers.

Does SM allow payment by PayPal? Google Analytics or PayPal would be my guess.

Nope. No PayPal. My first search on Google yielded that as a hypothesis, but we don;t have it

I should point out by the way that the reason I'm asking in this particular page is that it was the entrance referrer for the order. I've seen it deep in logs before, but not as a possible entrance.

Unless it was perhaps bookmarked "as is" by the customer.

Sometimes GC *is* live before it's official. I got pages of links that I thought were live one time but the Merchant told me they were not live on GC yet. After they went live I had to go in for replacements but when I saw they the replacements were the same I just used the links I had already created. I think they run through some testing before you go llive.

Well, if that in fact is what happened, I owe someone a commission. But SAS didn't pop that sale....

I just checked ny tracker and the google parameter is gclid ... so it does seem to be analytics rather than anything else.

    I think Staril is right.

If you're not doing it, might an affiliate be sending direct PPC traffic? if so, and if they have the google tracking turned on, that parameter will get passed through on the click.

Yep, gclid is google click id related to adwords ppc tracking. It also interacts with google analytics. It's part of the mechanisms G uses for conversion tracking, click fraud identification, unique versus visits and much more. If a ppc advertisers turns on auto-tagging within their adwords account, g will auto append the gclid throughout their account and work their internal magic from there.
