Really! What's the difference now with them interfering with your 404 from any other page you serve up, I call Bhollocks. Fair play on how they display your pages in their SERPS but this type of messing isn't on.
It's not their URL in the address bar, they shouldn't be changing that page.

I have the beta toolbar on vista, and I don't get that search page on a 404. I just get the old:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage...

Maybe I have an older version of the google toolbar. mine says:
    Version: 5.0.1112.3348-big/en (GGLL)
    Notifier Version: 3.0.914.9778

ah, i checked that box, and now i see that google page.
I kinda like it. My site has custom 404, so it doesn't do anything for that, but when I mistyped my domain name in the url, it DID suggest my site! That's much better than a 404!

I don't read Matt (Propaganda King) Cutts stuff, but the original TechCrunch article that the first site referred to has the rest of the details in the comments.

Much as I like to cuss Google and dream of seizing them as my first act as Dictator of Earth, this development seems to be not evil, at least not yet.

IF they are accurate at determining which is which, it sounds okay. But I have a vague uneasiness about what'll happen when the toolbar encounters nonstandard configurations (nonstandard = not programmed in the usual or "proper" way).
