What to wear to the Affiliate Summit.
I didn't see any mention of this on the summit site and I need to pack tonight.

Is it ok to wear Jeans and other casual clothing to the Summit, or will the Summit dress code and fashion police kick me out if I go casual?

I have seen everything from jeans to suits. Whatever you are comfortable in. However something nicer for the parties. Khakis or something maybe?

Generally the affiliates seem to be more casually dressed than merchants and network folks. Last July was my first summit and, as flamingo world said, you'll see everything from jeans to suits.

I wore khakis and polo shirts in Miami and felt properly dressed at all of the events.

    the summit is "business casual"

the venues where some parties are have dress codes, all of which the minimum is no jeans, no hats, no bandannas, no sneakers, no sandals

No hats, huh... hmm. I wear a hat pretty much all the time, I'd better figure out when and where I can't so I can prepare

ok, thanks for the feedback. I summary, I can go casually (jeans are ok) to the normal summit events.

I might have a problem if I go to a party. I doubt I'll get invited to any parties because I'm way too boring :-) All I do is work, chat, read fiction, and water my houseplants.

I wore sneakers when I went to all the parites at the summit a while ago.

But most people are dressed in khaki's & dress shirt for those day seminars & stuff. you will probably see some folks in shorts and others in suits.

Comfortable shoes!! I went cheap one summit and bought some nice looking discount shoes, but they killed my feet in just one day. Better to fork over a few more bucks for something with added support and comfort. Afterall you'll be standing for a great deal of the event.

Good shoes are a must. Get some Moleskin to prevent blisters.

Jeans and a t-shirt would be the most casual you would want (and you won't be able to get into some of the nicer restaurants or venues). Dress pants and a button up shirt is about the most formal that you need. I'm not sure I recall ever seeing any affiliates wearing suits - only marketing and C level employees from merchants and networks.

I think you're missing the bigger point though - while it's our business and people can wear what they want, the event is being held in someone else's business, and *they* might have a dress code. Not so much for the sessions, but for the parties, the restaurants where the dinners are, that sort of stuff.

There's also the matter of first impressions count

If Steve Denton (CEO of Linkshare) only had 5 minutes to spare and 2 affiliates approached him at the same time

One was dressed like ghoti's avatar (no offense dude ) and one was dressed in business casual, which affiliate would he take seriously?

Ditto for every booth you enter and every networking opportunity in the hall.

I did a LS summit recently and I was amazed how many have come with suit and tie .. All LS reps have a suit and tie (almost like a uniform).

Glad I went with a suit and tie.

While Aff Summit is more casual, a sports jacket or suit or tie won't hurt IMO ..

What you say only matters if you are trying to impress someone. I'm an affiliate, the merchants need me, I don't need them. It's not like they are paying me, I only get a commission after something is sold, so technically it cost them nothing since, I oly get paid from the profit of a sale they would never have had if it wasn't for me. If I don't make any sales, they never paid for the work I used to attent to sell their products.

With all that being said, the people in the suits are there to impress me, not the other way around. I have turned down many more merchants than merchants have turned me down. The number is not even close. Why I would want to talk to the CEO of one of the large networks (except Brian of course, he is cool :-) I don't know.

As for the meet market, I'll be wearing a specially designed t-shirt for the event and jeans. For the parties, I'll wear a nicer shirt and slacks, but I have no intention of wearing a suit.
