Clicks vs IMPS; is 0 IMPS suspicious?
Some of the pages with affiliate links we created last week are starting to bare fruit (wawho!). I read some older posts this morning regarding clicks out-pacing impressions and how that could bring suspicion upon a publisher. We have many clicks but no impressions because our pages currently contain no third party objects such as banner ads, merchant gizmos, or images. The merchant is eBay and at this point our links are text only. Is this something I need to be concerned about to stay in good graces with the network? Where do IMPS come from in this context?

    In a word, no.

While the terms of most, if not all networks, warn against modifying the tracking codes, in practice there is no negative impact from not using impression tracking.

Thousands and thousands of affiliates have used click urls with no accompanying impression code for many years. It is just not practical to include an impression tag in many cases and no network would enforce it's use (or could if they wanted to).

A lot of eBay links do not register impressions. RSS, flexible destination tool links, and EK's to name a few. Honestly, with over 1K clicks a day, I don't think I've registered an impression anywhere in months. eBay has never concerned themselves with it in my case, and it's been years.

Bobby beat me to it. Was just about to add that when I used eBay RSS beginning of last year, I had clicks but no impressions.

Consider how that manipulates a mearchants CTR, by the way.

So, in essence, a merchant could claim a higher than factual CTR to attract new affiliates?

Nobody would claim anything about CTR, since it's completely irrelevant, especially with nearly unlimited ways to promote an affiliate program (banners, text links, ppc, etc.). Conversion rate is what's important.

I used to use the tracking code images when I bought into that nonsense about clicks out pacing impressions ... until I learned here that it doesn't matter, and that in some cases the impression images display a warning that a site isn't safe by some software programs people are running out there to protect their computers. That's when I decided to start removing all of them from my site.

Also what business is it of CJ's how many visitors I'm getting and for what merchants? I have my own stats to keep track of that for myself. And I don't want to feed them extra data. All I'm interested in learning from CJ stats is how many sales I made.

    CJ flagged traffic?
    I 've got a problem....
    need advise..
    I will vaguely say
that I drive traffic with banners to CJ offers
the first day I had about
    1500 clicks 939 impressions 4 sales
    2nd day about 1500 clicks 46 impressions 1 sale
    3rd day about 1500 clicks 7 impressions 0 sales
and for about a week impressions ahve been less than 7

what I do is copy the landing page code out of the html link
and send traffic directly to the landing page

is it possible that I have been flagged by CJ for non-conformity
to some rule... to go from 939 to 7 impressions in 3 days is suspect...
BTW IÁ haven't had a sale since my booming start....

Not claim in the true sense of the word. It's just an innocent byproduct of the imp tracking (if any) not being used, and plenty of legit sites don't use it.

I don't think there's enough affiliates who would sign up based on CTR for a merchant to bother fiddling with it. EPC is far more important, from all I've read (and my own experience), and imps don't factor into the EPC calculation.
