U.S. says it now can shoot down dead satellite
I read about this a few days ago but it looks like they're going to try to shoot it down within the next couple of days, should be interesting:

An attempt to blast a crippled U.S. spy satellite out of the sky using a Navy heat-seeking missile possibly on Wednesday night would be the first real-world use of this piece of the Pentagon's missile defense network. But that is not the mission for which it was intended.

One news article mentioned that the first attempt would be 10:30 pm Eastern tonight. I wonder if it would be visible by the naked eye, and which direction we should look.

If we can see it blow up at night, I wonder if it would look like a scene from Star-Wars or one of those movies.

It is my understanding that the Chinese did this several months ago to one of their satellites that was falling from orbit and the US raised holy hell about it.

cnn said that the US did this air to air in 89 and have been working since January to get 3 missiles ready. The military claims that due to the low orbit (150 miles up) everything should fall from above within a few hours, vs the Chinese deal that left 100k lil orbiters up above when they shot the satellite at 528 miles up

    Cool Talk about a niche!
The US gov't has the hottest event going on tonight and they don't Dick Clark to host it!

Why not auction the right to push the button off on eBay or let some kid from the Make A Wish foundation or StarLight do it?

With all the bad things going on lets have some fun with the cool stuff!!

It's just GWB's way of showing off his shooting skills making Cheney jealous. Like throwing a bottle up half a mile away, as George quickdraws and fires from the hip, blasting the bugger into a million pieces. Nothing John Wayne couldn't do in his prime.

According to the news reports, the whole thing cost $60m ($10m for the missile and $50m to set it all up). Don't we really have anything better to do with our money???

Maybe paying off the $10t federal debt and $50t social security + medicare unfunded obligation would be a good start (t = trillion btw).

Lightbulb Ummm, what could we have done with the money?
Saving people from radiation poisoning is pretty high on my list.

So we spent how much on SDI, but ultimately shot it down with a submarine-launched missile? I'd like my money back.

If they'd bought that satellite from Sears, they could have purchased an extended warranty on the thing.
