    WiFi at Summit?
This might seem like a silly question, but I can't find mention anywhere that the Summit West event has free WiFi access.

    Does anyone know?

Did in Vegas last year. It's a safe bet.

In fact, I remember a big pile of laptops charging in the food commons there.

This is a good question. Normally, there is a free WiFi access in certain areas, but this year out of all sponsorships the Wi-Fi Sponsorship is one of the few that are not yet sold out.

Yes, we will be providing WiFi on the Monday and Tuesday of Affiliate Summit in a designated area.

We would certainly love to have a sponsor, but it will be available with or without a sponsor.

How much does it cost to sponsor that?

Did any one else experience difficulties accessing WiFi at the Summit?. The access was intermittent for my iPod Touch. At most 50% availability at slow speeds?

I was able to attain wif-fi only in the exhibit hall, no where else, not even in my room, no bars for the wi-fi so had to use only the ethernet cable....disappointing

The underlying Lodgenet pipe was overrun by the influx of geeks so there were backlogs and service denigration but overall the signal was just pathetic.

The wi-fi for Summit was specifically for the conference area, not for the hotel at large. I have to say, I'm absolutely shocked and dumbfounded that the Rio doesn't have wireless internet throughout the hotel. I stay at Hampton Inns on a regular basis for half the price and they've all got wireless. I always travel with a pocket-sized wireless router, but I haven't had to use it recently... til I got to the Rio.

    Hectic,

Welcome to Vegas - lol! Our hotels aren't like normal hotels.

We don't generally have wi-fi in the rooms because we don't WANT you in your rooms - we want you gambling.

Same reason why Coronas are $6.75 at the bar - plus tip - when the same thing is free at a slot machine.

It was also confusing to signup to the wi-fi. Kept asking for a conference code, and since I couldn't find it in the materials provided by registration - I just used my Blackberry.

Hectic, I've been looking for a pocket wireless router (linksys used to make one) but can't find it anymore. Which one do you have?

There were geeks there? What other convention was in town?

That's a good point, Billy. I can see how the hotels would look at it like that.

buyjewelry, the router I've got is aNetgear WGR101 Travel Router. It's a little on the older side. If I were to buy another travel router right now, I'd pick up an Apple Airport Express. I use it's big brother (the Airport Extreme) at home, and it's been fantastic.

Well I'm glad that you were able to get it in the Exhibit Hall as that's the room that I paid for it to be in.

The tables in the back hall that were used for meals remained there on Monday and Tuesday, to be used for our wi-fi area.

I have opted to not pay for wi-fi in the session rooms. The reason for this is not because of the cost (although you would be shocked to know what I was charged to have the wi-fi placed in that one area). I feel that the speakers and attendees present in each of the sessions deserve the right to not have to deal with other attendees banging on their laptop keys. It's just common courtesy, in my opinion.

So, if anyone was banging on their laptop during the sessions -- they were likely paying for it on their own dime.

    Thanks Hectic,
I think I am still going to try to find the linksys one - only because it allows to share both wifi and ethernet connections wirelessly - from what I can tell about the Airport, it only allows to share a wireless connection.
