Do Affiliate Links hurt SEO? Yes or No or Maybe?
I'm creating a blog that highlights products from my affiliates that are marked down, on sale, or have a coupon code.

If I'm creating rich unique content but and incorporating non-cloaked affiliate links within this content, will this hurt SEO and my rankings?

I'm sure this is a hot topic. I look forward to all the feedback and opinions.

    Some will say yes.

    Some will say no.

I don't know the answer but I always cloak links on my blogs because I think it looks better, and I feel as if people will be more likely to click.

I hate going to blogs that post these long shareasale links. It's like come on, class it up a bit. Whether the average, non-marketing person thinks the same thing is up for debate.

Once I tried to cloak links but it was such a hassle that I gave up the cloaking.

I have a combination of blogs & static sites -- I don't think that affiliate links within a page created by my unique content causes any SEO penalties.

If you use Wordpress it's really easy.

If you don't, then if you keep a simple html template for a javascript redirect on hand then it's easy too. I don't mess with the .htaccess stuff.

Any link to other sites affects your SEO, not just affiliate links. Google, for example, takes into consideration not only your page content but also the sum of all inbound/outbound links and the content they lead to and from, with the goal of determining what your page is about and whether these site relationships are related and relevant.

This is why random linkbacks are really counterproductive to SEO. All those linkback request emails you receive, if they come from unrelated sites, are clueless webmasters working from outdated pre-Google (1996?) ideas.

Also, a lot of stuff is cropping up now which not only helps you cloak your URLs but also adds nofollow, this keeps your pages from leaking rank too, but not all SE's respect nofollow.

Upload it to your plugins folder on your server.
Activate the plugin by going to Plugins in your admin panel
Go to Manage and you'll find a link to manage plugins

Normally, you just upload the entire folder/directory. Isn't there a readme?

I've got the plug in installed, however, when I click on "Add HIdden Link" nothing happens. I read the comments and this problem happened with others, however all they had to do was switch some small text in the .php file from V.1 to V.2. I did this and it still doesn't work. ANy insight?

I use a much better plugin IMO:

    http://w-shadow.com/blog/2007/07/28/...for-wordpress/

The plugin nofollows the affiliate links assigns a unique URL for each.

After you hit "add link" you have to fill in the information and hit "Update" if you fill in the info first then hit "add link" it doesn't work unless you add something in a box and hit "Update".

So the box should be blank, hit add link, fill in the box, hit update, it should work. Thats all I can say because it's not my plugin.

Pro. Thanks for all of your patient help on this.
I don't have an "Update" button anywhere under my Hidden Affliate Link Plug-in Tab.
Here is how I access my Plug-in. WP--Manage-->Hidden Affliate Links. On this screen all I have is "ID" "Match Slug" "Replace Keywords" "New Keywords" "New Link" "Redirect Link/Code" and "Description" Then I have the "Add Hidden Link" Button. There is no Update button.

    Thoughts?

'Check out Matt Cutts ' blog for information on how Google values affiliate links. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/

To my understanding they are not given any value. Organic links may give you some SEO benefits as I have had affiliates with my in-house programs comment on that. So if the link looks like www.merchant.com/product_page?aid_12345 there report that they have gotten some indexing by Google.

If you hit "add hidden link" does a new row show up? It should and there should be two buttons, one that says update and the other that says delete.

Maybe I should install a fresh copy on a new site so I can see if it's any different.

    I am very visual.

Can you take a screenshot of what you see so I can see if we are working with the same thing because what you describe isn't what I see.

    Manage-->Hidden Affiliate Links

ID Slug Link Code Description Add Hidden Link

Once you click Add Hidden Link you fill in the info under Slug Link Code and Description.

Next to that are two buttons, one says Update one says Delete. Hit update. These buttons don't appear until after you hit Add Hidden Link.

Can I place a screen shot in this Forum and Post?

Also when I click Add Link, nothing happens. All of the text boxes are already under the
ID Slug Link Code Description Headers without me hitting "Add Hidden Link".
