    Ask Quitting Search!
Just when I thought Ask was showing good possibility as a 4th legit search engine...

"In a dramatic about-face, Ask.com is abandoning its effort to outshine Internet search leader Google Inc. and will instead focus on a narrower market consisting of married women looking for help managing their lives. With the shift, the Oakland-based company will return to its roots by concentrating on finding answers to basic questions about recipes, hobbies and children's homework."

No matter what (Ask) did, it just wasn't enough to get people to leave Google," said Chris Winfield, who runs a search engine consulting firm, 10e20. "This looks they are raising the white flag."

That's too bad (I did like another strong & independent search engine to go to) ... but actually it was over for me when they got rid of their cute AskJeeves Butler

That doesn't necessarily mean they're ditching their search technology, but they are changing their marketing focus.

man, how did i miss this story? oh yeah, was in bed with the flu.

maybe they revamp Jeeves... ask Fabio...

    Spun:
Jim Safka, who became Ask's chief executive two months ago, predicted the retooling will breathe new life into the search engine.
"Everyone at Ask is excited about our clear focus and the trajectory-changing results it will deliver," he said in a statement.

    Unspun:
excited, as in... whew, I was hired to compete with Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, now all I gotta do is take market share from Rachel Ray.

    Fabulous idea!

Back in 1992 I stood in line for an hour at a shopping mall in order to meet Fabio & get my picture taken with him

Yeah, that's what we need, Google with zero competition.
We did not change as we grew older; we just became more clearly ourselves.

While my traffic from Ask was tiny, a lot of it converted very well so I'll miss 'em.
