i hate when affiliate managers send out seemingly 'exclusive' coupons and say it's only available to their 'top' affiliates(is it really exclusive if 30 sites get the same coupon?). or even worse they send that same 'exclusive' coupon to anyone who asks. What gives?
For me personally to promote as exclusive, It should be a custom coupon code & unique deal made specificially for me, or at most less than a handful of sites.
Am I wrong in my thinking?

To me, an exclusive coupon should have the following characteristics:
a)the code contains my website's name
b)it can only be redeemed from my site (sorry site scrapers)
c)the offer is not widely available anywhere else
Now, is that realistic? Probably not.

Sometimes exclusive just means it is exclusive to the affiliate marketing channel. In other words, consumers will only get exposed to these deals/offers/coupons through affiliates (not search, email, etc.).Todd Crawford

Valid concern but from another POV- there are hundreds of sites asking for exclusive coupons. Of course they are not given to everyone...but you can only offer X amount of different kinds of discounts to A) not cut into your margins B) try to maintain a smooth, consistent consumer shopping experience...too many different offers floating around for each brand does not look good either.
To Joshua's point some back end systems are not able to track so many individual codes down to the affiliate level either (which is unfortunate). Sometimes what we'd like to do is not what we are able to do
