So, hubby and I went in Petco today to get some wild bird food. We stopped by the budgie cage, as always. The bird specialist was cleaning it at the time. We chatted a little bit and then she told us about one of the females already being hand tamed. It would perch on her finger or sit on her shoulder and not even try to fly away (or bite, that's a plus). She took her out and we played with her, checked her over thoroughly. She seemed in good health and was very sweet. I would've said no, as we already have 3 budgies, but I left it up to hubby since he cleans the cages. Long story short, he has no will power and we now have 4 budgies, 2 male, 2 female. The good news is, after the quarantine period, our odd male out will now have a companion. He already seems very interested in her across the room. He's been glued to the side of the cage. LOL.

She has no name yet, but here she is.

    Beautiful birdie!

When I was a kid, the only pets my parents would let me have were goldfish (that never seemed to live too long - very depressing) and parakeets. We had a couple that lived for many, many years, and later on MrsHound and I had parakeets when we lived in our first apartments. When we bought our house, though, and added cats (and hounds) to the household, it was very difficult keeping them away from the birdcage, and when the last birdie passed on, he wasn't replaced.

Funny story about the parakeets we had when I was about 7 or 8. We had 2, which I named Mr. K and Mrs. K (after our last name). I had been taking piano lessons for awhile, at a studio, and switched to a new teacher who came to our home. This was at the height of the cold war, and the Soviet premier, Nikita Khruschev, referred to in the press as Mr. K, was always in the news, though I, at 7 or 8, had no idea who he was. My piano teacher was an animal lover, and spent time after each lesson with our birds. A few lessons in, she asked their names, and for a few weeks was very stand-offish, until we asked what was wrong, and found out she thought we were Communists, naming our birds after Khruschev.

Anyway, congrats on the beautiful addition to the family.

Very nice birdie. We had birds when we were kids. It's nice that this one is tamed already. Many people don't know that birds have personalities and can make great pets. If I had the time, I would probably get a cockatoo.

Its chest looks like the wild blue sky with just a puff of clouds. That is a very nice looking bird. I can see how it would be hard to say no. Congrats on your new addition.

It's going to be tough to keep the new one quarantined for a month. Budgies are very social animals and already the new female is squawking and trying to figure out how she can make her way over to the bigger cage. We'd love to oblige her, but for all our budgie's health, we have to keep them separated til we know she's not carrying any disease.

We're trying out a name for her... Peanut. While we were discussing possible names, I spied a stellar's jay in our backyard taking two peanuts out of one of our feeders and the name just popped out. Good thing it wasn't meal worms, eh?

We've discussed other names. My 5 year old niece suggested Sparkles. LOL. But Peanut just seems to stick.

We can already see she has a great personality. She's sweet and very tame, but she shows a little attitude now and then. She'll be able to keep the fellas in line. LOL. All of our budgies have very distinct personalities.

And here I thought our next pet would be a puppy....

She's beautiful Meadowmfn! Birds are so cool! As SFCom said, her chest looks like the sky. Very beautiful! Maybe name her Sky.

If we didn't have a zoo here already, I'd for sure get a bird. Enjoy her.

    Umm.. yes? LOL.

Peanut is a bundle of fun. She is fully hand tamed already and seems very comfortable around us. She's a quick learner and curious, loves getting handfed treats of bird seed in exchange for "shaking hands". She still needs a little work on that trick, but she's motivated so we'll keep trying. LOL.

She loves my laptop. If she's anywhere near it, she'll make a beeline for it and follow all the animated happenings on it. She chased the cursor yesterday as I swirled it around the screen for her. She also managed to wander across hubby's laptop and turn on the video player and switch it to full screen for him. I wonder if she'd make a good affiliate marketer. LOL.
