My brand new merchant who I have put on about five sites got hit and is off line for going on three days, now!!!!

I don't think the home office knew until I called them because.... heck, I don't know.

Anyway, their host is somewhere in the orient and it STILL isn't fixed and all my new sites go to 404 pages!!!

I'm so

People who write these things should have to face my wrath!!! I'd give them what for but good!

May malevolent hedgehogs gnaw at their manly parts and may a sympathetic lawyer blow up their investment portfolio.

Good one. I'll have to remember that.

But seriously SSanf, if the merchant has been offline for 3 days you may want to take a closer look at them??? I don't think this worm has been around 3 days. And what merchant could down that long and not know it?? Are they used to not getting sales for 3 days?

This is a really big jewelry merchant! Not saying which one but they are more into wholesale and just sort of starting in affiliate marketing.

Some of you know who I mean, I know.

I hope they awake to find a horny gay rattlesnake in their bed if they don't get back up soon!

All day. All freaking day. We patched an old server and somehow, somewhere along the line - the virus didn't get us - but patching an old NT system did. Something got corrupted. Took down the server. 9 straight hours.

ARGHHHHHHHHH.

We run both Linux and Windows. To be honest, if were running as late of a version of windows as we are linux, this would not have been an issue today. But linux is free, windows is not.

So I am still running nt4 on a server, I would like to see the linux server still running the same version of linux from 1997... and until this problem, that box was one i could forget was running, except of course for the nice reminder that investment was serving email for 75,000 people a day with zero downtime in a year.

Okay, what are they saying is their plan to get their act together? If you operate a really small business, do you still not have an alternate plan for hosting? After three days..

Received through a friend:
quote:
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ADDRESS BOOK

I learned a computer trick today that's really ingenious in it's
simplicity.

Just received it from a friend. As you may know, when/if a worm
virus gets into your computer it heads straight for your e-mail address
book, andsends itself to everyone in there, thus infecting all your friends
and associates. This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your
computer, but it will stop it from using your address book to spread further,
and it will alert you to the fact, that the worm has gotten into your system.

Here's what you do: first, open your address book and click on"new
contact", Just as you would do if you were adding a new friend to
your list of e-mail addresses. In the window where you would type your
friend's first name, type in AAAAAAA.. Also use address AAAAAAA@a.aaa
Now, here's what you've done and why it works: The name AAAAAAA
will be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be
where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends.
But, when it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA, It will be undeliverable
because of the phony e-mail address you entered. If the first attempt fails
(which it will because of the phony address), the worm goes no further and
your friends will not be infected.

Here's the second great advantage of this method: If an e-mail cannot
be delivered, you will be notified of this in your In Box almost
immediately.

Hence, if you ever get an e-mail telling you that an e-mail addressed
to AAAAAAA could not be delivered, you know right away that you have
the worm virus in your system. You can then take steps to get rid of it!

Pretty slick, huh?

If everybody you know does this then you need not ever worry about
opening mail from friends.

Pass this on to all your friends.

In my Real Life work, we've been patching solidly for two weeks, but so far our firewalls have held and we haven't been hit in Northern Europe yet, but I got a call late last night to say that two of our US sites had been hit. They thing the culprit was an infected laptop that had been used on the public internet and then plugged into the corporate network.

F-Secure are saying it took just 27 seconds for an unpatched PC to be infected when hooked up to a standard internet connection.

It killed my wife's PC at home!

I would have noticed earlier, but I have been chasing a DNS problem with my largest site. Damn thing is up and down but I cannot figure out why.
