Could this scenario get you a penalty with Google?
Iíve been to the Google Webmasterís Guidelines but I canít find anything that answers this. Can anyone help?

A webmaster buys a hosting account for his new website. The account features the ability to host multiple sites with one site being nominated as the main site on the account.

After a year or so the website (letís call it mysite1.com) reaches a Google page rank of 3. The webmaster decides to launch a second site on the same hosting account. (letís call it mysite2.com). The second site can actually be reached via two different URLs, mysite2.com or mysite1.com/mysite2/index.html.

Now, since mysite1.com is already a page rank 3, the webmaster decides that it might be a good idea to run a link from the home page of mysite1.com to mysite1/mysite2/index.htm as opposed to running the link to mysite2.com.

Search engine keyword searches return results for both mysite2.com and mysite1.com/mysite2/index.html, representing them as two different sites despite the fact that it is actually one site with two different URLs.

Questions: How would this practise be viewed by Google? Is mysite1.com/mysite2/index.html seen as a mirror site of mysite2.com?

Does anyone have any other thoughts on this?

They aren't different sites if it can be accessed in a subdirectory. Yes, it's the same content on two different URLs, which makes it duplicate content.

even if the 2nd site's content is unique, cross linking from too many sites that you own will likely hurt your seo efforts, the opposite of your goals. G is a registrar, so they have access to your domain reg info (and have many other ways to identify site's as being owned by the same person), so keep your cross linking to a minimum and make sure the links are very relevant to a visitor's needs.

I absolutely agree with this, in fact, I have paid very heavily for doing something very similar to what you are proposing.

Thanks for the help guys. I take it that cross linking sub-domains is OK? I guess it would defeat their purpose otherwise.

    Example:
    mysite1.com links to sub1.mysite1.com
    sub1.mysite1.com links to mysite1.com
    sub1.mysite1.com links to sub2.mysite1.com

Yep, subdomain cross linking is fine, but don't forget the relevancy comment from earlier, it still applies (don't just nest a bunch of unrelated subdomains so that you can cross link them).
