Cool - thanks so much for the heads up...I'll be on the lookout for the article.

I just looked at their website, and the tag line is interesting:

"Affiliate marketing: So easy, even our dog could do it."

"Hatchet job"? NO, more like her dog defecated on the industry!

Jason is a media / attention / marketing whore, so his efforts were transparent, but for that to carry forward as a presentaion of our iundustry with this article is nothing short of an abomination.

    Holy I am rilled up.

Do you think letting him keynote at the affiliate summit in any way legitimized his viewpoint and helped lead SmartMoney to him?

I think the author took his comments out of context to fit her agenda.

He said a number of times how he wasn't talking about the industry as a whole, but about the "thin affiliates."

I've not read it yet, likely won't. Who will be writing the letter to the editor with an opposing (correction) view?

By his own admission, he didn't know much about the industry. How could he be considered by any media outlet as an authority for such an article?

Basically the summary of the article is that we are drunk and spammy individuals who clog up the internet. Not good. The author admits to signing up for a network using the name of their dog too, without any problem getting approved. Wonderful.

Because despite what he said about not knowing much about our industry, that's how he presents himself. He has set himself up as an expert about everything to do with online business and marketing and there are people out there who don't bother to check to see if that's actually true.

All of the editors and her email are posted on the website. I encourage everyone to write them and let them know why this article is not acceptable. I just did and wrote why, I also CC'd her on the email.

Talk about some bull ... she apparently got her press credentials in a cracker jack box. Missy really said it best in her reaction video.

OK - she's an authority because:

    1. So easy her dog can do it
    2. She tried for three weeks and she can't do it
    3. Typical noob - (she'll be demanding PM access next)

    Just read the "article".

Ironic that it was surrounded by banner ads, sponsored ads, and other crap

My kids could write a better article than that.

I gave up reading SmartMoney Magazine years (nearly a decade) ago. I just didn't find it all that smart. Hasn't changed much it seems.

By the way, most trade-shows I've attended had parties and beer, what's the big deal...that it gets published in a well known magazine...I smell a smear campaign brewing.

I compiled clips from the keynote at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePsArmqqUJk to vividly show how she based her article on comments taken out of context.

Wow, this article was not well written!

As for affiliates clogging the web...Well google has pretty much taken care of that! These days, you don't get ANY traffic with what the big G would call a "thin affiliate" site. The comments made could perhaps apply 4 or 5 years ago!

Affiliates make less than $100 per month? Where does that come from?

Wal-Mart and PetSmart.com and no earnings? No surprise to me.

Obviously, the author has not hung around this forum. If she did, she would realize that affiliates are some of the most inspiring folks one could ever find to be around.

    Her characterizations are completely unjustified.
