    Hi Gang.

Hope all is well! Boy, did this place grow!

I was hoping someone can help me. I was wondering if there is a program out there that can trace IP addresses of people who post to a discussion board on another website. I volunteer as a moderator on a fishing website and the webmaster refuses to help me prove that some of our "problem members" are posting under three or four different screen names. I was wondering if there is a way to trace the IP address of specific posts or members?

Anyone know of anything (free of course) that I can utilize?

    Let me know.

    Thanks & take care!

Seaslug, without assistance from the webmaster this is truly difficult. You failed to inform us if you had the ability to add a script to the service that could log each IP instance to a particular folder when a post is made.

I guess I didn't read the post close enough...I just thought you wanted a site to trace an IP address you already have...
Most message board / forum scripts have IP logging and display options built in. If the owner doesn't want to disclose that info, there's nothing you can do. They could probably set it so it's visible to you, but what I suspect is that they may use multiple identities, and they don't want you to know, or they realize that that can be considered sensitive information. I, personally don't let anyone view IP addresses aside from myself on any of my forums for both of those reasons above. I don't want one of my moderators abusing their powers & I'll occassionally log in as a different username to ask a stupid question, or to get the ball rollin' on a new board.
Basically, it's their board, so it's their choice.

AXS: Name Lookup - this form resolves IP addresses into hostnames. It is called by the AXS script, but can also be used independently.

    Its a free script.

The webmaster is probably the one making the trouble causing posts. Webmasters are notorious peoples.

I was thinking the same thing. Some webmasters use this trick to get a discussion started up on a new board.

    Thanks everyone.

Haiko, I love how this site has taken off!!

Back to my situation... I know it's not the webmaster because a few of the usernames I suspect to be duplicate posters have complained to the webmaster about me. They made false accusations in an attempt to get me booted.

I don't have any cooperation from the webmaster on this. I'll take a look at those links you sent me and let you know how it goes.

    Thanks again everyone!
