I haven't looked into this in a while, and I was thinking about it. Do sub domains easily pull PageRank from the main domain, or is it still easier to establish the "authority" of a new website section by simply having it in a subfolder of the main domain?
I ask because I always struggle getting a .htaccess file to behave properly in a sub folder, while I have no issues on a sub domain.

As far as .htaccess behaving appropriately in a subfolder, keep in mind that .htaccess in a pare t folder would override that in a sub-folder.
As far as your direct question, I still do subfolders, I still myself see subdomains seperate..so I'd think so do search engines.
