    It Stinks. Really, It Does.
I have a skunk, apparently, who has dug himself a nice little home beneath my front porch.

Ahhhhh, I'm trying to come up with a gentle, non threatening way that I might be able to suggest he relocate, best I can come up with is maybe a live trap of some sort, far enough away from the house, if he would find it, that he won't spray the whole dang porch.

But even then, what, exactly, do I do with a skunk trapped in a live trap??! I mean, best I can figure is a long rope, but really, where would I drag it to? I can't very well drag the cage behind my car.....

    -sigh-

The only bonus is my family has gone to Florida for two weeks, so I have some time to douse the smell if he gets me or the house.

Don't cheap out on this...use a pest control company. The downside of messing up is much bigger than the upside of a DIY success.

    My pleasure.

I used to live in an area that was called "Skunk Valley" before it was populated and turned into a suburb of Chicago.

My back yard record was 5 skunks at once. I was smoking a beef brisket overnight and man did they love the grease trap. Fortunately i scared them away with some loud, left over fireworks and didn't get a**ed on.

I do have a funny story related to this, my friend Dianna, who lives on a farm was dealing with a family of skunks at their place, living under their barn. She had always heard that, if you shoot them in the head, well, they will not release their scent.

Well, Dianna developed a corollary to this theory, which is, if you WOUND a skunk in your front yard, you can pretty much guarantee you will receive no visitors for an extended period of time.

The skunk managed to crawl back under the barn before it expired, BTW.

Anyways, I don't wish to kill it, just relocate.

Can't you just go spray some air freshener in it's vicinity, save some money. Or fight fire with fire. Spray some Old Spice or Canoe cologne. Or light some scented candles, drive him nuts.

Skunks are soooo cute! (We have a bunch of 'em in our neighborhood, too.)
Sorry, mine is not exactly a helpful response... I <3 animals, even stinky ones.

Put a couple boxes of open Mothballs under the porch. That should do it but who knows where they will go when they come out.

High db Hip Hop/Rap music is the answer. It's never been tried but trust me it will work.

Trust Me I've been through this, hire the pest control guy, they use a humane trap and release them in a suitable environment.

I live in a very old house with the original stone foundation with just a crawl space, no basement. A nation of skunks made their way through the cracks in the stone. By the time I called pest control, I had 16 skunks under there. There's also the issue of potential rabies. So don't try to nickel and dime it.

    Good Luck!

We had a family of raccoons that burrowed under the porch and nested in the crawl space under a room. They would come across the top of the top of a privacy fence when the family was in the hot tub. They were really cute but would come right up to the tub which scared the little ones.

We tried leaving a radio with a staticy channel running all night but it didn't phased them.

My son donned his camos and crawled under the porch. He soaked some rags tied up into balls with ammonia. They left the next day.

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. The porch itself is maybe 50 feet long, with the crawlspace fully enclosed except for this one, 12 inch area that has been dug out. So, moth balls might not reach wherever they are living, though it would certainly irritate them as they arrive and leave.

I'm definately going with the pest control company, I can see this.....ending poorly for me, if I do it myself.

    It's actually tomato juice.

It tooks months for the smell to leave my house. Luckily it was summer and we could keep the windows open. Worst part of it was that we (the people) smelled bad too. No matter how often I washed our clothes they would re-assorb the smell so fast.

It got into the house's wood and no amount of anything would get rid of it, just time.

I would just rewarn people about the factor of potential rabies. Depending on where you live, it could be a real issue. It is here.

Aunt Lily, YIKES, that sounds like a complete nightmare! Sorry you had to go through that.

Yeah, I heard it was tomato juice too. Hope you won't be needing it though, elbowcreek.
