    Hi All

Here's an interesting question for you all. I have heard that US copyright on printed materials, at this time, does not protect books printed before 1923, and all such books and their content are public domain...is this true. If so, is this an 80 year ruling, or is it fixed on 1923.

So taking that one step further, if a person buys a book that was published in 1920 and uses the content (unchanged) on their web site to sell or promote products is that legal?

    Cheers

    Chris

Do the appropriate research to find out for sure.

I do not know, but believe that in some circumstances an author's estate can renew the copyright.

    Hi Chris,

Stuff right know before 1923, give or take a year, is indeed "public domain" and can be used as such.

Recently, Congress just extended copyright protection, again, in order to protect works developed in the late 1920;s and 1930's (the charge was led by Disney, who didn't want much of their older animations going into the public domain).

Lots of sites use poetry from the 1800's and early 1900's on their sites.

Still, never hurts to double check things!
