    PHP automated service
I have a problem. I need to create an automated service that runs everyday for a client that does not have access to crontab. We are using PHP script.

The best I can come up with is running a function off the home page that checks a db table to see if the job was run that day, if not, run it and log it. This of course relys on the homepage being hit everyday but that is not a problem for this site.

I was just wondering if anyone else had to deal with this type of problem and what they came up with. Thanks for your input.

I'm sure you have thought of just getting him to move to hosting that has cron.

Yes of course. Unfortunately it's not an option.

    Dholland,

    Been there done that.

Find a hosting company that has cron - any of yours will work. Schedule an hourly job to trigger a PHP file on the other host. I can call any HTML or PHP file on another host from my host. You just need to call his 'http://sitename.com/cron.php' from your hosting account

Great Minds think alike. I read the firsts post in the thread and I thought almost exactly the same as you.
    Thanks,
    Doug

Yeah, I thought about that too. I was going to run it as a scheduled process off my windows server. But I really don't want the client relying on my server. I guess the only option is to run it off the home page. Thanks for all your suggestions.

How about scripts that emulate crontab?

    for example: http://kineticscripts.com/cgi-bin/se...cgi?script=116

Now that sounds interesting. It doesn't give much information though. I'd like to know more about it before forking over $25. It says CGI, I wonder if it's a Perl script?

Actually, after looking further, it's not $25. It's pretty misleading.

It was "original retail price: $25 - now FREE for members."

    But membership is $79.99.

A bit of a rippoff if you just want that script. I'd keep looking along that line, maybe you can find a free one at www.hotscripts.com

Thanks for all your help. I found a pretty decent one I am going to try. It's pretty much the idea I had in my head but this is already built. Why reinvent the wheel. It's call phpJobScheduler http://www.phpjobscheduler.co.uk/
