    PR Suggestion for NY Affiliates
In virtually all of the news articles I've read about the new sales tax law, there is a quote from a NY official or business group representative about how this law will benefit NY businesses by influencing people to buy from NY stores as they will no longer be saving sales tax by buying online. Example:

Meanwhile, the new tax is being viewed as a potential boon to some small businesses in the state.

"Smaller stores - especially book stores and music stores - have been getting hammered'' by competition from Web-based companies, said Ted Potrikus of the state Retail Council, who said his members have been put at a disadvantage by having to collect sales taxes.

"This helps to level the playing field,'' he said.
from New Internet tax takes effect Sunday

I think it might be helpful if NY affiliates would get out information to the public that hundreds, maybe thousands, of NY affiliate business are being destroyed by the new law, about how so many merchants are dropping NY affiliates rather than collecting the tax.

You can do this by writing letters to the editor to all the major newspapers, by adding comments to articles like the one linked above, and in blogs (which I know a lot of you have done). I think letters to the editor, however, will reach the view of a lot of people not otherwise well versed in the internet.

    Just an idea.

Great suggestion. This was pushed through by offline businesses, offline news needs to be aware of domino affect, especially pointing out not only is there NOT going to be the sales tax revenue they expected, but that they will LOSE income tax revenue by the internet marketers losing income.

It is a nice idea, but it is a confusing topic (not all merchants are doing it) that effects a small number of people compared to even the NY bases businesses. Public opinion isn't going to win this, this is going to be won in the courts.

Agreed, it is just about impossible to explain to Joe6Pack what affiliate marketing even is, and most people won't care. I'm amazed that NY developed enough of an understanding to try and exploit this so fast.

Not to try to explain affiliate marketing, but rather to show that the new law is harming NY business rather than helping it as the state and brick & mortar business organizations are spinning.
