New type of phishing email.. beware!
I just received the most professional looking phishing email ever! Disguised as a very sharp newsletter from US Magazine.

It contains the US magazine logo, the image "4 free issues, click here" lifted directly from the site, celebrity photos & the proper US menu bar:

Home - News - Photos - Style - Entertainment - Celeb Dish - Dream Wedding

Seriously folks, this is the best forgery I've seen in all my years - these guys have improved their publishing skills ten-fold.

The usual giveaway is the url: usmagazine.phishingsite.com

Just wanted to let everyone know to be on the lookout!

You mean I'm not getting those 4 free issues?

Thanks for the heads up. It does seem that these guys just keep getting better and better at making their emails look legit.

but like you said - a key is to look at is the url and also their email address.

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of people who do not "know" to look at the URL - or even know what a URL is.

Nope. But your subscription to Dog & Kennel will remain uninterrupted

re: url, yes many will not even look. This was disguised using a subdomain as well. They've done such a good job, it's frightening... anyone interested in tabloid magazines (a guilty pleasure of mine!) will click on this in a heartbeat. Terrible.

One nice thing about using McAfee is they aleart you to phishing emails. In any event, I ALWAYS check the full header just to make sure.

Now that I do affiliate marketing, I always look at the url, before I wouldn't have known. I have Norton 360 which is great. But I still want my 4 free issues....

My favourite scumbag mail is from Western Union. This is content scraping at it best.

I get them from Pepsi too. I called pepsi and the lady simply did not give a shit.

I got the head guys email and flipped him a few screenshots, but he never did anything about it.

Western Union did. But the twits just spammed me even more.

Contrary to what I have been sort of told, I do not mail market and I do not condone it. At all. The 30% respo0nse rate sounds great, but I'll be damned if I'll do that to people. I am on the receiving end and I'd sure like to catch they servers on fire buddy. What don't get burned up will get f**kd up by the baking soda they spray off in that thing in sheer terror.

    Folks are a mess.

Really scary stuff. We are young and a little savvy so we are on the alert for these things
But what about Joe Public who hasn't a clue

Something really has got to be done about these emails

    I get 3 or 4 a week

When I received another fake email today (supposedly a "daily newsletter" from the magazine), I forwarded it to US Magazine to advise them they were being used for phishing (found a contact address under the Privacy Policy).

I received an immediate reply: "Thanks for letting us know!"

Nice to see a responsive company...
