I actually prefer charcoal, but answered "gas" because when our outdoor kitchen was built we really weren't given an option...

I used to have one that did both Charcoal is best but if you needed a quick burger or hot dog gas was ok. And I would have picked "like to start CONTAINED fires..." but flavor is more of the issue

    Yeah, that's what I meant

And for most folks in the city, this is about the only "legal" way to start a fire.

I use gas because it is much easier and less messy than charcoal, but I actually prefer the taste of food cooked over charcoal....much better flavor.

I actually bought an old, but brand new, hibatchi at a garage sale a few weeks ago for $5. Not one of those cheapies they sell in Wal-mart now a days, but one that must have been 30 years old. It weighs a ton. I promised myself I would cook a few burgers on it real soon.

Gas is so much easier, and once the grill is seasoned there is very little difference in flavor.

If you're gonna use gas you may as well stay in the kitchen.

Same here. Soak some wood chips in water and put them in a smoker box in your gas grill. You can't tell the difference.

Charcoal all the way! We bought a charcoal grill last week and broke it in on Friday. The results were superb - NY Strips, squash, corn, red bell peppers, mushrooms, white peaches, and pears.

Since "big ass eyebrow singe-ing bonfire" was not listed, I chose charcoal. Hubby was a big propane fan. He'd never had anything cooked over charcoal before. I converted him.

    charcoal
most home gas grills don't get hot enough to cook a really good steak, imo

does anybody here have one of those newfangled infra-red grills?
If so, I'm curious if they like it. ( might have to get one of those someday. )

That's kind of what I was getting at with the response "I like to start fires" if you are referring to the eyebrow singing "whoosh" as you restart the charcoals with a big dose of lighter fluid.

My hubby is King of the Grill, we use gas but I prefer charcoal, yep great flavor. I won't light the gas grill, scares the heck out of me. Personal Problem.

Gas - it's just easier - and faster.

I have a fire ring to start my fires, don't think it's exactly legal though . I do like fires.

I prefer gas when I am just making a burger or hot dog. It is nice and quick and tastes just fine. But if Im cooking a big dinner, charcoal is the only way to go. It is great for tailgating as well.
