Omaha area being slammed by tornadoes
Sitting here in my basement now for over an hour as I hear even more tornadoes are heading towards us. All this after our town got hit by a freak tornado a couple of nights ago in the middle of the night without any warning.

The really sad news is a local boy scout camp was hit, 30-40 injuries and possibly some fatalities. I used to go there when my kids were scouts.

Please keep all these people and our community in your prayers tonight.

    I'll provide an update later.

We're with you, man (in thoughts and prayers, as Bill said). Stay strong and may God keep your house, family, relatives and fellow Omahans safe.

Four confirmed dead at the boy scout camp. So sad.

To compound things, the local radar station got knocked out by a lightening hit early in the evening so all information is actually coming from storm spotters.

So sorry to hear! Used to be in KS where the sirens would go off all the time. Luckily nothing serious or major like that has happened. Very scary and sad. When are the tornadoes supposed to hit?

Looks like the worst has passed here and little damage to our city, but tornadoes all around the city tonight. The two heading towards us fizzled out before they got to town.

Word from the boy scout camp is 40 injured, 4 fatalaties and every building leveled.

Now the entire region is under a flash flood watch as our ground is all saturated (we live on high ground).

Thanks for all your prayers, thoughts and concern. Our hearts and prayers are now with those to the East of us still in the path of this storm and for the parents and families of the boy scouts who suffered and lost so much tonight.

Those poor kids. What a horror!

    Stay safe, everybody!

I have family in KS, MO and IA. My cousins in IA live in a trailer, which freaks me out.

I missed this thread last night. Weve been watching the flooding in and around Iowa City as it's directly affecting 2 of our children and their families. Then we saw the Boy Scout camp tornado story. I just realized this morning how close that was to Omaha and came looking to make sure 7Days was still on the map.

We're sending good thoughts and prayers to everyone recovering from or still suffering from this severe weather. The kids are telling us that the snow in Montana is the first time since 1993, which is the same year that Iowa City flooded so badly. I know the record for tornados has already been exceeded across the country before the official season started.

    Stay safe, everyone.

Yeah, the Boy Scout camp is maybe 20 miles north of Omaha. I was there just once for a campout with one of my boys years ago and it is pretty rugged. Pretty significant when both NE and IA governers show up at the Boy Scount camp today AND the secretary of Homeland Security shows up too.

Iowa is in really bad shape. They are saying it is the worse flooding in 500 years and I recall just 10-15 years ago they had the worst flooding in 100 years.

Myself, I had to take the day off from everything and remove everything from a room in the basement. The carpet and carpet pad was completely soaked. Our ground is so saturated from a week of heavy rain it is finding ways into the house.

But all my problems seem very minor when compared to the families of the children at the Boy Scout camp.

We are just not having the best luck here in Omaha. Last evening, around rush hour, a storm blew through with straight line winds reaching 80 mph. Trees are down everwhere, including on houses. We escaped any real damage at our house, mainly shredded all my wifes plants. Thought we had fared pretty well until I went to where we store our travel trailer. Two sides are pitted all over, one window broken and the fins on the room air conditioner are smashed to the point I'm sure the AC unit is totaled.

I hope that's not the new RV you were thinking about.... I saw the news about the big storm yesterday that cancelled Olympic trials there and wondered if you and yours were affected.

Glad you're mostly OK and you didn't get a tree on your house.

No, thankfully we had not gotten the new trailer yet (heck, we've not even been out camping this year).

Yeah, the Qwest center did sustain damage, but none to the actual pools. I'm heading down there in two hours as my daughter has been invited to participate in some swim prior to the opening tomorrow. We have a couple of tickets for the entire event and sure do hope the weather around here decides to cooperate.
