    Gmail Comprimising User Privacy
Saw in my blog referrer files an individual who came to my site through their gmail account. As it turns out, gmail passes the account name as a parameter, unlike Yahoo.

So, if you don't want a webmaster to know who you are, and you use something recognizable as your Gmail account name, I'd recommend typing the link as opposed to clicking on it in your Gmail.

As a side note, I highly doubt this person cares that I know what article they read. Truthfully, I don't say much in my blog that I don't say here anyhow.

The link in the email was a news alert on a keyword, clicking it should not reveal my email address to the blogger. It's obviously a privacy issue that Google needs to fix - and fast!

Editted the title to get some more eyeballs. This is pretty serious.

I checked my web log files for the last year or so, and none of the traffic from Gmail had any usernames in the referer URL... What was the full URL that you saw? (minus the actual username, of course)

Could it be that Firestats/WordPress picks up the url differently?

Haiko, how did you file the complaint? (I would like to know for future reference)

No, the stats program and the blog software don't affect the referrer.

mail.google.com/mail/x is the mobile version of the Gmail website. I tried it on my iPhone and clicked a link inside an email, and the referer in my server log file looked just like what you posted but without the account_id=xxxxxxx@gmail.com. (The iPhone's IMAP Gmail client sends an empty referrer, on the other hand.)

Maybe it's different on different mobile browsers, though. You should try to look in your web log file to get the user agent info (i.e., the browser type used) for that click to your site, and pass it on to Google so they can fix the problem.

FWIW, I just clicked through a link to my site in Gmail and the referring URL was empty. I also checked the URL of the frame and it's like: http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&vi...r=ymdfwq781tpu with no account_id.

Hotmail had a similar problem years ago. I remember that all my Hotmail referrers had email addresses in them.

Must be something to Ghoti's assertion that it's a mobile browser issue, perhaps.
