    Upcoming google tool.
    Hm. From today's WSJ :

As soon as Tuesday, Google plans to unveil a new service that measures Internet use, according to advertising executives who have been briefed on it. The tool is intended to help advertisers identify the best places to buy online ads by telling them which Web sites their target audiences visit.

With these services I always want to know, where are they getting this information from?

Hmmm. I guess I already know in Google's case but comscore and the others I still don't know.

    More big brother...

Prowebaddict, I believe many of these companies ask their users to install toolbars, which sends usage data to their servers.

"Advertisers study the data -- which can estimate the total number of people that visit a Web site or the average amount of time those people spend on the site or both -- to try to determine which sites are popular among particular demographic groups or in certain topic areas, such as technology or health."

Google already has a lot of that due to a lot of people using Google Analytics.

Hitwise and Compete.com get their data from ISPs. comScore gets its data from an "audience panel" who all have comScore's toolbar installed.

They take part of the data from Adsense, and Google Analytics users who have opted to let Google have anonymous, aggregated statistics of sorts from their tracking to my understanding.
