As soon as Tuesday, Google plans to unveil a new service that measures Internet use, according to advertising executives who have been briefed on it. Prowebaddict, I believe many of these companies ask their users to install toolbars, which sends usage data to their servers.

Google already has a lot of that due to a lot of people using Google Analytics.

They take part of the data from Adsense, and Google Analytics users who have opted to let Google have anonymous, aggregated statistics of sorts from their tracking to my understanding.
