I ordered a SSL on late Friday evening from them and I've just finished installing it. That is service ... WOW again!

Yes I know I could have gotten a cheaper SSL but I need the verisign "reputation" for this new service offering.

I think their reputation is for lousy service, high prices and being bullies.

I paid $25 for my cert, works perfectly and no one can tell the difference. I can spend that other $324 on building my own reputation.

-edit - My bad, make that $874!!!! do they really charge that much or is that a typo? 128bit encryption - $25

Do you think most people check who the issuer is? I am mr paranoid and even I don't do that.

Did they actually tell you they wouldn't sign up? Are they asking for proof?

No, but the logo on the sign up page will tell them and that will do it.

Thawte is owned by VS, many know this but Corporate people still don't trust thawte ... I've seen it!

Fact is that people know the Verisign certificate and brand name, regardless of their 'real' reputation. It is all part of the first impression you want to give your target audience. If your marketplace thinks you are cutting corners by using a cheap certificate, then you already have a trust issue even before you start. Haiko's spot on with this.

I can get the "VeriSign Seal"through the hosting service that I use. $99.95 a year ( "The price for the VeriSign Shared Hosting Security Service is just $99.95 per year plus a one-time setup fee of $24"). Not sure if that is cheap or not. Just thought I would add to this though. lol

Verisign's reputation took a real plunge when they pulled their 404 typosquating move last week. Compromising their trust of the .com,.net and .org domain names and turning off spam filtering S/W sure tainted their secure server cert business.

I think Haiko made the right move, in spite of VeriSign's recent...umm...issues.

Stuffy corporate types will be slow to judge a big company like VeriSign, and the initial impact of the company logo will still serve its intended purpose.

I have my domain names through Network Solutions, and they've been dealing with a bad image problem for years now. But the fact remains, whenever I've had a problem of any kind, they've taken care of it quickly and efficiently for me.

I've even had a few of their reps go out of the way to help me, so I have been impressed by that.
