I am running a placement targeted campaign in google adwords and understand the concept of what avg. position means in terms of search. But with placement targeted campaigns the avg. position isn't determined anymore on search results. By question is does anybody know the meaning of avg. position in terms of placement-targeted campaigns?

Content targeted ads are on websites in blocks of 2 or 4 (usually). I believe that if it is a block of 4 and your average position is 3.1, that the ad is showing in the 3rd and 4th position. There can be multiple blocks of 4 on a page, so an average postition of say 5.1, would have you on the second block most of the time. This is my interpretation and I believe it is accurate.

you got it right Cathy. But boy, I've launched about 50 placement targeted campaigns with very poor results. Bidding on keywords always works better for me.
