    Cuil, pronounced "cool"
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Anna Patterson's last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG) bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system.

She believes her latest invention is even more valuable - only this time it's not for sale.

Backed by $33 million in venture capital, the search engine plans to begin processing requests for the first time Monday.

I also read an article about this on the BBC web site. They claim to index more pages than Google ... but ... I seached for maine coon cat ... having one sitting beside the keyboard ... and found no results at all.

    Google has 837000 results.

    Hmmm ........

Working on the assumption that the word coon might be to blame. I tried maine cat and did get 11168 results but many seemed to be duplicated.

I'd say this search engine may have a long way to go before it can be considered useful.

Edited due to previously mentioned cat deciding that the enter key would make a good pillow.

I just found Cuil this morning and decided to check it out. I found lots of glitches and irrelevant results. A search for one of my sites using the URL did not bring up anything. But, a search for my full name brought up one of my pages. Looks like they'll be doing a lot of tweeking.

    Servers are slow.
No results shown for a 2 word phrase BUT returned GOOD results for the 3 word phrases on the subject.

It's "cuil", a totally different format. You can change from 3 to 2 columns, title, blurb in paragraph form and a pic.....but when I put in my keyword, which is the title of my blog, which I have 2 on page 1 of Google, I am not on page 1 or 2 or 3 .....or 11. I stopped there. It seems that the same sites and products come up. Don't know if anyone will ever replace google, it's a standard

Good idea (considering who), good for competition.

    Poor name choice.

Not ready for prime time. (tired a few different searches)

Interesting magazine style layout. I could see this catching on. They have some real work to do on the engine itself though.

Nice search engine, left me with a very crisp impression.

This one is a little different as well: www.searchme.com . A visual search engine, that just shows you the front page of each website in the search results.

I searched for affiliate marketing forum and it didn't find anything. Good thing I already know where to find one.

The results were fine for that search.

They may have your IP blocked - lol

A search for my domain (which is also a phrase) brought up sites that scraped mine over my own domain.. nice... and buried on P4 was my "terms of use" page with some weird photo of a law firm logo.

Definitely not liking this... they have a ways to go if the want to seriously compete with the big G.

    That's odd. Here's what I get:

We didn’t find any results for “affiliate marketing forum”

    Some reasons might be...

    • a typo. Please check your spelling.
    • your search includes a term that is very rare. Try to find a more common substitute.
    • too many search terms. Please try fewer terms.
Finally, try to think of different words to describe your search.

The first time that I clicked on your search link ABW was at the top.
    This time it's not.
But there is a full page of results.

Under preferences I turned "safe searches" off, and "affiliate marketing forums" started returning results. So, they may have 'affiliate marketing' on thier unsafe list, I dunno. Would not respond with results for that search under safe search for me.

I wonder if others will act because their logo is associated with another or another's is shown for your site - NOT CUIL!

That could kill it before the speed issues.

I searched for a few 4 or 5 word phrases and got 0 results. Seems they're not ready for prime time yet.

I looked up all of our targeted fundraising terms and we were #1 or #2 so I love these folks ... results on those terms does not differ much from Google though.

They really have a problem with the logo's, I have saw my logos for other sites that are listed. And I checked they are not using my logos on their site. I also Checked one of my sites and it is showing a banner for one of my merchants.

Like others, I was completely unimpressed with the results when I checked a couple of hours ago. I don't think I ever found an image that matched the site it was shown beside; very dreadful site and text selection for the results. Google has absolutely nothing to worry about.

Right now, I'm not getting ANY search results -- it looks like the news reports have caused complete saturation of their database server.

Added: Searching again for my own name, my web site is shown with an adjacent image that looks like a skin rash or disease -- certainly not any image from my site. The quoted text is stripped from the bottom of my page and certainly doesn't help someone evaluate the relevance of the site to their search.

heh. their servers now appear to be down. publicity can be a great thing. too much too quick though can be disasterous.
