We're fairly close to the epicenter and it was pretty strong here, but no damage - a few pictures fell off of shelves was about all that happened.

I just tried going to the post office about 1/2 mile away and it was "closed due to earthquake damage."

Here in Torrance it was just a nice roller. No damage that I'm aware of.

I heard from my family down there and they're all fine. No damage. Though, mom was about to start the laundry and wondered why the washing machine was moving before she turned it on. ROFL.

Sandy and I were at Pasadena in college in '71 when the San Fernando Quake struck at 6:00 AM. Wow[!], what a way to wake up. Everything was shaking and rolling. Freeway overpasses came down, hospitals came down, and a reservoir earthen dam was on the verge of rupture. Whenever an aftershock hit everyone headed for the doors.

Then in the 80s we vacationed in S Cal. We stayed in a high rise hotel in Buena Park. A quake hit before we left for the day. Weird thing was that in the tall building the motion reverberated to the top and back down again in waves. Gave the kids a "thrill", and their first earthquake experience.

    Hope everyone's ok down there...

My folks are in Torrance too. A lot of that area sits over pockets of oil, so you get a nice little cushioning effect. I bet it's a lot like how the first anti-skip protection stuff worked on portable cd players. LOL.

I was on the 20th floor of a 24 story building right next to LAX when a 3.0 hit. Hardly noticeable on the ground, but for the rest of the day I was in serious need of dramamine. The building was moving for most of the rest of the day, enough to make me nearly lose my lunch. Blecch.

The Northridge quake (6.7) nearly knocked me out of bed... and since the bed was right under a window, I leapt out of bed to avoid any shower of glass. The driveway is no longer level with the sidewalk or walkway at my parents' house and dad had to patch the chimney because of that one.

That quake in '71 happened to knock down the hospital my twin and I were supposed to be born in - needless to say it put my mom into labor and we were born early the next morning in a hospital that stayed put.

I am in Torrance too, we should meet sometime. I was on my way to the Farmer's Market and did not feel it. My son was at home and said the walls shook pretty good in the house.

It is at times like these that we really comprehend what is important in life. I wish the best to everyone affected by this earthquake. Living in disaster-prone areas definitely takes a special type of courage. Stay strong!

    Don't think so, Rhea.

Neither of my 2 L.A. friends are visible on Google chat at them moment, so might be some connectivity issues out there.

I was gonna go to the farmers market today too but I forgot. I couldn't find any cherries there on Sunday. Maybe they are done for the season.

Yes, we should get together. I'm at Hawthorne and Del Amo, where are you?

You're right. I've been wondering about her. There are a lot of phone lines out so maybe that's why we haven't heard from her.

Only "magnitude-5.4"? We get stronger earthquakes almost every year down here.

LOL. Lost, I was born and raised in California and when I heard it was "only" a 5.4, I was actually a bit relieved. LOL. Getting rain is usually more of an event than an earthquake in California.

In downtown LA it was definitely better than a second cup of coffee to get the heart going, but no damage. When they're short and no one gets hurt they're kinda fun. Well, after the fact. While it's happening you keep thinking, "Is this another short one or should I grab my bug-out bag and head outside?".

Hopefully this will encourage more folks to stock up on emergency supplies. We spent about $200 last year to put together enough food, water, etc. for more than a week if needed. At a minimum, everyone should always keep at least three days' worth of provisions on hand.

Off to take the subway home now.
