I tell people i'm in affiliate marketing. They have no clue what i'm talking about. Sometimes i just say i have a website and smile. Sometimes i just say i stay at home and play on the computer and get paid for it. Sometimes i just say i have my own business online. Don't know of any cool names tho. I'm sure someone can come up with something cool

I usually just tell people I have an Internet Company, and that seems to take care of the question.

It is a bit vague, but many people don't understand what Affiliate Marketing is.

Yeah "Affiliate Marketer" tends to draw head scratches and clueless questions. The last guy asked me to "come to my house and show me how to do it. I'll give you 20 bucks"

"Internet Marketing" usually gets the idea across.

Andy hit it right on the nose for me. However, if you ask my wife or her relatives, you'll get various responses from "Get a real Job," to "Loser," to "Huh?" They just can't understand how anyone could work for themselves, from home, and do it entirely with a computer. Of course it really shows just how ignorant all of my Wife's relatives are (and what little I think of them).

I might also add to Andy's response, something like "Developer of Internet Properties." That really get's their attention. I usually add that it is sales oriented when they ask for details. If they (Incorrectly) get that "Oh, you must be in MLM" look in their eye, then I might elaborate further (about how this isn't MLM).

    What is my job title?

My own boss. Sometimes I like to use Owner.
I've started toying with "President and CEO of my own domain" (domain having a double meaning). That's for the folks who like fancy titles.

After explaining to people in length what I do with little resultant understanding, I know say I am a Online Traffic Director.

"I garner qualified traffic (people looking for stuff to buy) and direct it to appropriate qualified merchants (people wanting to sell aforementioned stuff) who then give me commission on resulting sales."

That seems to do the trick.

That reminds me of when I was the store manager at a truck stop a few years ago. We were a corporation, but were owned by another corporation and really didn't have executives per say. I used to tell everyone that worked there that I was the Vice-President of Sales and Procurement. Sure did make me feel important.

    I like this job title:
    Marketing Director of Internet Operations

Sometimes I say I'm a Commission Broker. That's what LA tells me I am when I do my taxes. If people ask what that means I usually say I bring buyers and sellers together on the internet. They just nod knowingly even though we both know they have no clue.

Other times I just say I have my own internet business.

I’ve given up on trying to explain what it is I do, so now when people ask, I just tell them that I’m a bum. With one exception. I just filled out a jury duty questionnaire, and for occupation I listed Internet Marketing. I’ve got one friend who I actually tried to explain it to. Now whenever I see him, he asks if I’m still doing that “Internet Voodoo Thing”.

When I tell people I make money off the Internet, most of them start ranting about spam and viruses, and I have to explain that it's nothing of the kind. At least my bank has accepted it as legit business - the checks clear :-)

To put it in brick and mortar terms people may understand: Independent Sales Rep (or agent) for several top Internet Retailers like: eBay, Amazon (or whatever companies you rep and want to mention.)

Or I have my own Internet marketing company and advertise for several top Internet Retailers like: eBay, Amazon (or whatever companies you rep and want to mention.)

I have my daughters bridal shower on Saturday and don't know hardly anyone, since she lives out of town. So I need to figure out how to explain what I do too.

    I love all these answers!

Next time I will not fix with one boring explanation, I will borrow yours and use a different one with different people!

I don't need to scratch my head anymore when people ask me, 'What is you job?'
