Tips for Wordpress users - I learned the hard way
Just for you WP users, I didn't realize that the new Wordpress has a default privacy setting to disallow Google and all robots. That would explain why my new sites were not being indexed at all.

To fix this, click the "settings"
    Then click "privacy"
Then check the dialog that says "I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Sphere, Technorati) and archivers"

Arg. BTW, I discovered this via Google Webmaster Tools.

I just installed 2.6.1 and the default setting is "On" for search engines. I turned it off as it's set up for tweaking. That isn't a Theme specific setting is it?

I think it might have something to do with the default "one-click" install from my host. So I guess it might just be something to look out for. I have about 10 of those blogs and it was the case with each one.

I installed via host's Fantastico too, but before doing anything with it I installed the Automatic Updates plug-in and updated to the 2.6.1 so maybe that's why my settings were different. It's a good thing you found that, now wait'll those shops all take off at once!
