    What's in a Name [Avatar]?
    A picture is worth a thousand words but not necessarily so for avatars. Oh, they're worth a thousand words at times but ones that may be deceiving. The first impression an ABW member makes is their avatar. Without one, the member is judged solely by their username and the words they compose... Yes, I said "judged". Who can't help but contrive a face, a level of intelligence, social standing, a geographical origin or location, a build, an age, or a gender?

    But an avatar more than colors your impression of a member regardless of the content of their posts. How many times is your impression deeply set upon seeing a member's avatar for the first time, only to find out later that they are actually male rather than female, a huggable teddy bear rather than a biker dude, an old man rather than Don Juan, a geek rather than Konan, a lady rather than a mudslinging 4-wheeling Jeepster, or ? rather than Michael Knight (you know who you are). And one that reminds me of Norman Bates scares me! There are a lot of members that are real dogs too. And those cartoon avatars... to me the member actually takes on the character of Homer Simpson.

    Perhaps those who use an original creation are the smart ones. I come up a blank for most of them. Want true anonymity[?], use a non descript avatar... or none at all.

    So, with my newly found "transparency" comes a new avatar that looks pretty much like me, isn't retouched, and was taken a couple weeks ago at the county fair. A look at my ABW profile will reveal the un-cropped image of my youngest of five granddaughters and I. I've included my avatar progression for posterity. I'm concerned about the lasting impression my bloomers avatar may have left and I fear that I'm becoming so transparent that my avatar may fade into the background=#000000!

    So, consider carefully the avatar you display because your avatar IS you.

    You took off your bloomers!
    It's a progression but I don't think a gravatar "is" anyone or no one would've carried on a conversation with you before. heh..

    I love the new avatar! It's funny how you get so used to seeing something next to someone's name that when they change it, it jumps out at you. And the full picture of you and your granddaughter is precious.

    As soon as ABW has a black background :-). You have a better chance of fading into:

    <style>
    body {
    background-color: #F5F5FF;
    }
    </style>

    :-)

    Ha Ha, I always forget which is which. All bits off to me logically SHOULD equal lack of color. In light (monitors) white equals all colors = all bits on. Gotta remember that!

    You know you spend too much time designing websites, when you memorize color codes. :-)

    My avatars have changed with my mood.

    I originally used the Bumble from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This somewhat reflected my self-image that I wasn't quite sure what I was doing in life yet.

    For a while after that I used Mr. Incredible because I felt like I could take on the world, even if not as smoothly as I'd like.

    Now, I use Captain America at a grave site. Captain America always tried to do the right thing and still he found himself at times unable to save those he cared for.

    There's a reason army's wear uniforms even though it makes them easier to spot. Sometimes that's what you want. Uniforms suggest organization, power, and numbers. These, in turn, inspire fear. And, as any good operative knows, there is no more effective weapon than fear.

    I think you have inspired me. I'm going to hunt around and see if I can find a picture of my goofy self to stick up.

    I've taken the plunge and posted an updated avatar. Just a shot of me on the back patio... but it'll do for now.

    I just took a look Jim. I was so way off. You would probably fit my impression better in a button up blue denim or plaid with your sleeves rolled up... oh, and berry stained fingers.

    Your impression is closer to what I look like these days, Ed. That pic was taken for an ID card when I was still teaching.

    BTW...my avatar is from a rubber stamp that I bought from a mail order company in Florida many years ago. It took me a long time to get it that clear and scan it into a jpeg.

    Also, when we moved to PA, I was up very late one night. The full moon cast the most beautiful shadows over the back field of our farm....so bright, you didn't even need a flash light to find your way. That is when we came up with the name MoonShadows Farm
